Is there a bell housing for the 4L60E trans that fits our Buick engines or is there no such thing? Car is going to be mid engine, looked at all possibilities and only the th325-424 so far will work, all other automatics (transaxles) have some problem, weak, gear choices, adaptability etc. last hope is the corvette C5 with 4L60E and getrag differential, but can it be adapted ? GM high perf parts catalog has stand alone computer to allow use in older GMs , at least Chevy. GNVAIR, you mentioned this trans a while back, using an F- body bellhousing, any info?

Kennedy Engineering makes an adapter plate to mate nearly any engine to a Porsche transaxle. The '78 and newer turbo Porsche transaxle can handle 700hp+. Probably not the cheapest route... but it would be a sweet setup (manual tranny).

unless i misunderstood my boss, but when i was working on transmissions he told me that GM had two style trannys (this was talking about 700-R4's which are pretty much as the 4L60E as i understand it), one style tranny was the chevy bell housing, and the other was the BOP (buick, oldsmobil, and pontiac) bellhousing... do if the BOP 700-R4 fits i would think there is a 4L60E BOP bellhousing.. i could be wrong.. just a stab in the dark.

TCI makes it. I've been using a 700 R4 behind a Buick for years in my S10 Blazer using this adapter, woorkes good. You just have to remember to put the spacers in between the flexplate and convertor to make up for the thickness of the plate.

Hope it helps, DJ

TCI also has the stand alone computer to run the 4L60E. That's what I'll be using to control the one in my Typhoon. Or you could modify a SyTy ECM to do it dirt cheap with a little know how. ;)

The bottom bolt hole in the bellhousing and the dowel are the same in the chev and BOP. I took a saws-all and cut above the dowel across the bellhousing on a 700R4 and a duel pattern TH350 then welded the TH350 to the 700R4. The trans then bolted right up in my GS with no adapter. I used the duel pattern so the dipstick had a hole to bolt to. Works great so far, about five years now.

TRiv.......if you are planning a mid engined set up, then you must use the C5 Corvette 4L60E trans. You cant use an F body or truck trans.
Once you have a C5 case, then you will need an F body or truck bellhousing to replace the torque tube bellhousing.

Thanks everyone for the help, at least I know now that the 4L60E can be mounted, now I have to decide if having the water pump and engine accessories halfway into the interior will be acceptable, the car is very cab forward with a long back end (from door post to rear wheel) but the engine ,trans, differential combo, even with the buick V6 is a bit long:(. The TH325-4L still looks like the only one that is still going to work, the only other automatic transaxle that may work is the porsche, probably the 4 speed tiptronic, though sounds like a compatiblity nightmare ( at least the electronics).
