As I'm looking at the car,it has a 1985 grill an the t tops are nonlocking an the inercooler has this ingraved next to the silver sticker 6/17/85 an a eight digit number above it.so what I wanna know is.is this one of the first cold air's tr's?trying to upload pic's but no luck yet.

I don't remember the build date, but the 86 I have right now was produced in 85. The car was a dealer "demo" and saw 2000 probably full throttle miles before my old boss bought it "new".

My 85 I had before was a LATE 85. My 85 and this 86 were only a few months apart. Look at your intercooler fan. Is the hub it's on stamped steel or aluminum? This 86 had a aluminum one, sort of looked like a billet piece. i've only seen that on a few cars.

There's other threads out there on early build 86s. here's one:
http://www.turbobuicks.com/forums/buick-v6-turbo-tech/58206-vin-question.html

A lot of the early build 86s have a sequence number that starts with a 2 instead of a 4. Supposedly 201039 was the first intercooled car at least by sequence number. My 86 parts car was 216857. regular regals were built in that sequence too and I think other g bodies were used in that sequence as well. So it's probably one of the first few hundred intercooled cars built. The rear axle out my parts car had a mid-85 date code on the ring gear when I pulled the cover.

I think the build date is on the cowl tag as well. takes some decoding if I recall correctly.

Check behind the drivers door interior panel. I managed just to pull the tabs on the outer left side of the panel, bend the panel a bit and take out the build sheet.

Id say it looks like billit aluminum.so what does this mean.I wanna do a frame off resto,if this is the right car.

That's what the one on my 86 looked like. Not sure when they changed over to the other style, but I've only seen it on early 86's.

If it makes you feel special, mine has an earlier sequence number and it doesn't have anything engraved in the top of the intercooler like yours does. Can't see the rest of it but the top is clean. I do have the billet looking fan spacer though.

Get the build date code off the cowl tag. I forget which corner it is but I think its a letter and a number and the letter is month and the number is the week of that month. Don't quote me on that but it sounds right.

I do feel special.now that I know u don't have engraving on yours.

I just wanted to make sure this is the right car for a frame off resto.sounds even better knowing its one of the earliest incooled TR's.but I do like the dealer demo story too.

Ok looking now thanks for the info.

Well I know mine won't be getting restored. I have the complete engine, a recased trans, and the vin plate and cowl tag with a salvage title. Actually the vin, cowl tag and title went with the regal body that the motor was in when I bought it (though I could get it back). The actual car was stolen and totalled in 87 or 88. Motor had sat dormant ever since in the engine bay of the aborted rebody project. 42k unopened LC2 set up isn't a bad thing to have sitting on an engine stand.

Have a friend, whose been trying to post. Has an 86 GN with vin of 2194xx. Bought the car from the dealer in 86 and was told it was a factory demo car. Came with a hotair hood pad, and an adjustable wastegate. Car has always been in PA. Any other 86s with a hot air hood pad from the factory?

Mine also has the indention for the hot air turbo but the pad is real bad.
