I was reading I believe it was the current issue of Car craft, and came across the article of the 6 speed GM :D tranny coming out that is supposed to be an easy swap for GM cars, and the heavier duty one that is being made for the trucks can handle around 500 lbs torque. Just wondering people's thoughts on this especially those of us with street cars

I want one, especially since all the data inputs it needs is sensors not an external controller. I think this would be great for those of us who run on the street more than we see the strip and want something Heavy Duty enough to take the beating a Turbo6 can dish out but still keep the lockup and we all know how Production Turbo6's aren't high reving engines so this will help keep the revs even farther down. Also since they are using a Ford C-4 style seperate bellhousing it should be easy for someone like B&M to make C and BOP housings for it for swapablity.

Would a 6 speed behind a motor like a turbo buick motor reall be very good perforamance wise? We make tons of low end torque and can use the wide power bands of a 4speed. Just a thought, i read the same article and think its going to be a badass tranny for sure

well it adds one more gear between 1st and OD, so that might help people stay more in the fat part of the band rather than running off the top or shifting into the bottom. GM is claiming it can cut the run quarter by a few tenths due to that but I don't know if they are talking Northstars with weak lowerend torque or LS# motors with fat ones. I'm thinking daily driver not so much race, its also heavier due to the extra "stuff" inside and probably more fluid.

I still want one,

Without being able to edit the onboard TCM, makes it all moot for the time being, unless, GM just so happens to have a calibration that would work precisely right on TR.

Or TCI builds a controller like they have for other Electronic trannys
That would make it easier

I hope their tranny controllers are better then their trannies.

They built the convertor in my car, And its by far the best convertor ive ever had in my buick,And ive had many different ones. But i never used one of the trannys

As I've said, I would wait until they get the bugs out of it. The T-50 manual trans was weak when it came out, but it's much better now. The 200-4R used to be on the avoid list, but build up knowledge was learned as time went on.

I'm sure someone will come up with a hi perf control for the 6 speed sometime. But, it may not be cheap, like the ones for the 4L80E. Allison already has a 5 speed auto trans, but it's very heavy, so rodders are staying away from it. So, let's see how this does on weight vs. strength vs. price.

I wouldn't think the box inside would be hackproof, just more convienient since you'd not have to wire in an external box, also for the tranny to be read for service codes its going to have to have an external link point unless they want you to drop the pan everytime you think theres a problem to plug the box in.

The trans you are talking about is a joint venture with both Ford and GM. They pooled $355 mil and 350 mil respectively and developed it for both parties to use. Kind of interesting both Ford and GM are going to use this trans. Should be an interesting unit since both are so invested in it for future use. GM must have some future plans (if they actually have a future) for a need in rear wheel drive power units. Since truck sales are way off, maybe a performance car? hummmmmmmm?

They are making 3 different versions of it. An X-14,X-15, and X-16. The X-15 is the trans you saw in Hot Rod magazine. It will go in the vette,XLR,small block trucks. The X-16 is being tested behind big block trucks. The X-14 is for mid size cars like the STS. They still have a ways to go to get the bugs worked out. It has no bands in it, it's clutch to clutch. I would not want to be the first guy to put it behind anything with alot of torque  . It will not like it very much! Don't ask me how I know  .
