Guys

I have found a 69 Chevelle SS 396. VIN 136379K396701. Needs a resto. The owner wants 10k

What do you guys think it is worth.

$10k needing a resto sounds a bit much to me.. You'd have a fortune in it if it needs a complete restoration.. But then again you are up north...

The last 6 vin on the engine should match the last 6 of the car if it is a "numbers matching" motor..

Goodluck!! All depends on how "bad" you want the car..

$10k is a lot for a 69 SS 396 needing resto unless it something special (convert, high options or 375 horse car)
This is especially true when you can buy one done for $15-$25

Depending on how bad the car is and how much is needed for the resto I agree it seems high to me.

Need more info: What horsepower is it, does it have aluminum heads, Auto or Stick, air or no, power options, rust, bench or buckets, color, miles......... :)

72K original miles, buckets, factory AC, 4 Speed. Has a little rust. 396 do not know HP as i am looking at car tonight.

PASS! That 10k is an inflated NJ high price.. You might do better
finding one all done for 12 to 14k

I stand by what I said. A good show quality paint job around here can cost $5000. That wouldnt include any sheet metal or labor for sheet metal which gets VERY expensive for 68-69 Chevelles. Have you ever priced fenders? The fronts are like $400@ Then there is the interior stuff and drivetrain related stuff.
Dude, you could easily put another $10k into it without blinking.
Personally, I would look for one that is done. You would be surprised what you might find for $10-$15k
Just stay away from Black Tie Classics in Berlin, NJ

I agree that 10K is a lot. Checking matching numbers is key, will increase the value. Take it from someone that has done a frame off restoration on my 1969 SS/RS 396 4-speed Camaro, you'll spend way more than that to restore it. I never added up all my receipts out of fear but I easily spent 14K restoring it, probably more!

You need to think and calculate how much restoration it needs. If it's just paint and an engine trans rebuild and is matching numbers then 10K isn't too bad. If it needs body panels, floors, wiring, as well as the above then it's not worth it. 396 4-speed Chevelle's weren't all that uncommon in 69, it’s not a 70 LS-6 car.... Also, you need to know what the HP on the motor was. In my Camaro there were 3, 396 engines. The 325 HP isn’t worth that much (all relative) while the 375 HP motor is worth quite a bit. Naturally mine is in the middle being the 350 HP 396.

Why don't you spend that 10K on finishing your stage motor, you're going to need it,m trust me! :)

Art thanks for the feedback. My wife has been doing very well at her job and was willing as i always wanted one to pay monthly for it:eek: She is cool. Anyway it would be cheaper to buy one done already and yes i need her to give me money for the S2:D :D

WOW, long time. The VIN is stamped on the block if memory serves me. I think if you look on the front passenger side of the block deck (which sticks out past the head) behind the alternator, you'll see 2 sets of numbers. The first is the engine code and the second is the vehicles VIN I think. I think there is a matching VIN number on the trans.

It really has been a long time for me as I've had my Camaro done for a really long time so I might be incorrect.

Also, on the firewall build tag you can decipher it to some extent to see if it was a big block car. Maybe if it was an SS and maybe if it was a 4-speed. On my Camaro all it says is that it has a “style” option which was consistent with an SS but could be purchased separately as well. It’s not an exact science. You’d need to check out the Chevelle sites.

I agree. Being a life long Chevy person and having owned a 68 Chevelle, a nice 70 GS is awesome!!! If I bought another old car it would be a GS 455. Since I don't have enough room for the 3 cars I already own I think it'll be a long time before I own a GS. I need to start watering that money tree.
