I have heard little about these turbos and I want to know what the major difference is.

What stall would they use?Is there a major difference between the two?

I met a guy around here who has a 76GTS on his car and he says it spools OK on a 3200 stall. This seems a little ridiculous to me but may be possible?

Considering the combo in my sig would either of these turbos work good and what would be a good reason to chose one over the other?

I only want to buy my next turbo once and have one that works good.I plan on mid-low 9s with this setup.Thanks.

Well the GT turbos do seem to spool much better than the older Garrets did. I'm assuiming that a low 9 is about as good as you could see with a 76 GTS turbo on a Buick.

spooling "ok" and running low 9's are two different things......I would think something like a 5000 stall non lock would be the ticket with that turbo (either one...) ASSume a TH400 will be behind it

local Stage II car just put a 76GTQ on and he has a 5000 stall/Th400......we'll see... I don't expect low nines even though he has Stage II heads (and basically stock suspension)

low 9's come on a back half/3000 lb (or less) setup

(Nick's car with the same setup as you runs high 9's with a 70GTQ.........I do not think a turbo alone will make that much difference)

Well... let me rephrase- they spool better at a given stall. Austin Kendall's car barely stalled 3000 rpm. And it spooled very fast with a 76 GTS. I foot stalled it myself and was very impressed. And then it ran a 9.45 @ 145, off the foot brake.... With a mere 1.6x 60' and at 19 psi boost...

Murillo's "grocery getter" 'stang you see in the magazines has the same turbo, and goes low 9's off the trans brake; high 8's with a small shot. This turbo is for real.

Wow,9.4s at only 19# is impressive.

Yes a th400 with a brake will be behind it.5000 stall would spool real fast, but what about useable rpms with a converter that loose?

TurboTR,do you think from what you have seen with a 76GTS that a 4000 stall would spool it fairly quickly?I want to drive this thing to some local cruises from time to time,no long distances, but around 4000 stall is as high as I would want to go.

useable rpm with your combo should be around 7500 or so if you wanna go fast:)

My GTQ 76 went 9.80 at 140 with 25#s with a weight of 3655 and an air/fuel of 9.91:) , Been saving the car for BG this year,Definelty had some left in it. Its a 249" stage 1 3.8 with a 226 hydraulic roller. Spool fast as hell with 4500 convertor
I have changed to the GTS 76 and it spools just as fast,But i have spent time with the fast tuning for quick spoolup,GOt it down good.
I have dne some small changes over the winter,Freshened the heads with conical springs and titanium retainers and took of the P/S and added the GTS76 and the new f.a.s.t XFI.
The nats will be were i run it hard,But i am going to get my lisense before then

I just purchased a 76 GTQ turbo from John Craig (.81 A/R turbine housing). I intend to purchase a 9" 3500 stall Art Carr (N stall) converter. I hope it has sufficient stall to give me some boost (5-10) #'s at the line. We will see. The motor was not built to run very high RPM's as it has a Comp Cam 218/212 flat tappet cam. M&A ported heads and 274" Stage 1 motor. Higher Stall in my opinion will not take advantage of the motor's mid range torque, at least in my case.

I wish they could stuff that 76 GTS in a 3 bolt. :( Id B all over it for the new motor.I know it wouldnt work as well but as in a 4 bolt housing, but it still be aweseome. At that point it might be just as good to stay with a 76 gtq...

Louie, Ill show you mine in BG:D We can do a quick header cahnge and downpipe and you can make some passes;)
Its the ex wheel why no 3 bolt,Its about a 1/4 bigger wheel

I'd be willing to put $$ down the 76 GTS is a 8 sec capable turbo.

Heck, I have run the times in my sig with a Turbonetics 76 MM T4 turbo with a cracked cylinder running 10.50 A/F at 24#'s of boost at #3450.

Ted im not real hopeful of putting down an 8sec pass,But hell at the Nats i ll give it a shotl,Not sure if the hydraulic roller i have is enough cam to pull it off
but i just got a 5 bar map sensor and with the XFi ill be able to fine tune boost over 30#s :) Ill have to test the limits of my stage 1 block:D
Im not sure where the sweet spot lies with it,as a have only driven it down the road and back with the new turbo

Hell im all for that. My plans are to run TSE with the 260ci 4.1 and basically everything else I had on my TSM motor including the turbo. That is unless my new turbo plans work out....;)

I have something on the burner now,If it works out ill send my turbo header and downpipe to you before.
Waiting to see if the other plan goes thru
TSO will be may competetive:cool:

I wouldn't be too concerned about the limits of that stage 1 until you are well into the 8's. With all the stock blocks out there going quicker than high 9's with smaller turbos, you "should" be able to get that combo into the 8's.

The nats will tell, I am looking to bring another convertor to swap while im there,I may need one a little tighter,Although my current one went 140

TOP GUN

not trying to steal this thread, but TOP GUN that some serious #'s ur pushing on a stock block. what Turbo and cam combo were/are u running.
