Ok i just bought an 85 GN and alot of ppl are saying it would be to much trouble to relocate the turbo like an 86-87. So my question is if i buy an intercooler for the 85 setup and want to go to a begger turbo will i have clearance problems because of the location? Also whats the largest turbo i could go to on a stock motor? Any help is appreciated. Thanks

I think you can run somthing like a 60 or 61 comp wheel on the stock turbo. and it all depends on how fast you want to go and what your doing to the car i dont think that moving the turbo would be worth the time and money compaired to other mods for our cars theres a few people that have gone 11s with there turbo right were yours is and one that goes 10s.

I was thinking of buying an aftermarket turbo for it. Also how much trouble is installing an intercooler for it? Could i come out cheaper getting the intercooler real cheap then finding all the plumbing? When i intercool it should i change computers to an 87's? Also would using the plenum off of an 87 help any? Thanks again for the input.

Send your stock turbo off and have bigger wheels put in the stock housings. On the outside it's exactly the same size. On the inside you can have anything up to around a TA62 which is more than you'll ever need. If you plan on intercooling it and don't have to worry about the outlet bolting up to the intake manifold, you might think about using the 87 compressor housing. It's a little bigger but fits easily and might be worth a little power. Depending on your goals, a TA49 should be all you'll need.

I'm not sure who makes intercooler kits for the hotairs anymore. I had a Spearco kit for a while and I liked it. I now run the Ford Powerstroke intercooler and have never looked back. It's a do it yourself project. You have to do a lot of cutting to get it to fit and the plumbing will have to be made.

One thing you should definately do if intercooling is move the throttlebody to the pressure side, as close to the intake manifold as possible. You can get an inlet bell made for the 87s to put in the throttlebody's place on the turbo and hook your MAF pipe to that.

Ok, didnt know they could easily swap out internals of the turbo's like that (very new at this) but that sounds good. If i went with the TA49, could i mount a 86-87 front mount intercooler and easily plumb it up with my turbo in the stock location? With the TA49 would i need to upgrade fuel pump or injectors? Ill definitely get a chip but any recommendations would be appreciated. This is gonna be a daily driver seeing some track time on thursday nights. Also do you have or know anyone who has used the QBoost Boost Controller? I saw it advertised and it sounds good especially for the price. Any pro's/con's to this? By the way im not planning on modifying the motor internally. Thanks for all the input.

You can mount up an 87 frontmount and make your own plumbing. That's probably the way you want to do it. My plumbing only cost me ~$40 for mandrel bent 3". Go to a muffler shop that has prebent tailpipe sections and buy one. They have a lot of bends and I cut what I needed and coupled it with silicone hose and t-bolt clamps. The silicone hose and clamps can be found at most diesel supply places.

Definately upgrade the fuelpump with a Walbro 340 and hotwire kit, even if you don't get too crazy with the mods. Once you decide which injectors you want, get a chip burned for them. I would suggest the 009s (43lb). They have no downside and will support you combo deep into the 11s.

Ok so a stock front mount intercooler, fuel pump,injectors,86-87 ecm and wiring harness, have turbo redone (thinking TA49 alot of ppl on here seem to use it), a chip, and a cold air intake system. Anything else? Also could someone give me the name of some company's that rebuild the stock turbo housing with upgraded internals? Would like to go ahead and get some prices on having the turbo redone but have no idea where to look. Thanks guys you have been really helpful and patient with me. Didnt wanna go crazy and start buying the most expensive stuff and mess something up.

Limit Engineering (john craig) rebuilds turbo's and he is highly regarded here on the boards. I had him rebuild my TA33 and I was very pleased with the work, price, and turn around time.
