I have a 1985 Buick T type I just recently got it running I rebuilt my top end, new heads, new cam, rebuilt tranny, complete tune up, welded a few exhaust leaks, etc. This car has me very frustrated I am not trying to race or anything like that I just want it to run the way it should! I love Ttypes and GNs I don't want to give up on my car after It took me so much blood, sweat and $$$ please help with any suggestions. Thanks.

Dont give up bro...I just finished mine and went through the same symptoms. Could be a number of things. Fuel, Ignition System, or something simple. Check the basics (The bogging and backfireing sounds like your Ignition system or timing issue..Coil,Module, or MAF.

did you put all the plug wires back on the right terminals? is the cam sensor set right? all sensors plugged in?

Where is my MAF sensor located on my 85 TType? Sorry for the stupid question! also could it be the 87 Octane gas that I am using?

Get some super, do not use regular. If you've got some E-85 available put a few gallosn in it to cut the low octane fuel and not damage the engine.

87 octane won't cause it to run like crap, and won't kill the engine as long as you stay out of serious boost.

the MAF (Mass AirFlow) sensor is in the intake ducting, between the air cleaner and throttle body. a quick test to see if it's acting up is to unplug it while the car is idling.. if it smooths out, then the sensor might be bad.

I am going to disconnect the MAF when I get home from work. One of my friends suggested that it could be my ICV? I will update you guys later.

Ok so I disconnected the MAF sensor yesterday and it made my run worse! so now we know its not the MAF. I took out my air filter and I noticed the car was idleing better? is there any other suggestions? This is what it does: it turns on and it idles good but when I step on the gas firmly it hesitates, stutters and back fires. I can hear the back fireing coming from under the hood? I appreciate all the feedback. THANKS!

backfiring is most def a timing or spark issue...might wanna check the coils, wires and plugs. I know this sounds stupid but double check that all the sparkplug wires are on the right cyls..double check wires and fireing order.

This post is dead on. I even screwed up putting the wires on the wrong plug and each wire was labeled. Put on ohm meter on each plug wire and make sure they are within 10 % of each other after verifying they are installed correctly. Brad

your coil or module is going take module to oriles auto parts have it tested and if its bad your gonna have to covert it to 86-87 coil and module get caspers wiring kit or try to clean off nuts and bolts that ground module cause they get rusty cause to conversion is $300. apprx my 84 needs coil and module they fry for no reason

Are you sure you have the plug wires on correctly? If the cam sensor is not installed correctly it will make it run rough as well. Another thing is a bad ingnition control module will do this.
