i think i remember the 84/5 headers were pretty restrictive and using an 87 is a good improvement....is this true....does it bolt right up???

the passenger headers are totally different, 86/87 driver side will fit but I think people have had problems w/ them.

take it off, take it to your local welder, give him $20 and say fix this please.. most likely you will be set, do not do not use gaskets, use copper permatex and let it sit overnight,

i suggest getting some grade 8 bolts from the hardware store with lockwashers, replace the ones you can, some i think are used to hold the dipstick.. never looked at the dr side very well. in any case your std grade 8 bolt from a hardware store, something like 60 cents, will hold up to the heat and not loosen if you use the cheapo 5 cent lockwashers.

they are usually zinc plated or something so they look better than the rust of the factory bolts.

if you do this, dont get stainless bolts, i read somewhere stainless expands and contracts more than any other metal.. do you really want bolts that expand and contract?

If you have someone weld the cracks, make sure they bolt/clamp the header on to a flat surface so it doesnt warp or move from the heat. You will have sealing problems if you dont do this. The guy that I know that welds them for people bolts them up to a spare head. I took a piece of thick angle iron, drilled/tapped some holes and bolted the header to it. This worked good and basically does the same thing.

I take it that it is impossible/unadvisable to weld them while they are on the car?

Stainless is soft. About the same as a grade 2 bolt. Don't want them breakin' off in the head.

if using an electrical welder i would say this is a definite no no because of the whole possibility of screwing up any and all electrical parts on the car..

id guess you could do it if you had enough room but the steering assembly might get in the way...
