Hello
Info on car 87 GN
chip-kenny bell (9006) on chip
kenny bell cold air package (washed and reoiled filter)
stock injectors
did have 160 deg thermostat
now has 180 deg thermostat

Car has always run good. It has never idled very good when cold, but after warm up was normal.
Now to the problem
Car sat for a while and would not start. Fuel pump was dead. Replaced with a bosch unit. Pressure with key on 39, running 35psi. Car has a hard time starting and check engine light on with a code for lean 02 reading also has a hesitation.
Hooked up scanner and o2 sensor stayed at 100mv. Replaced 02 because it was really old. Reading went up to 150, so did not fix it. Unplugged the Maf sensor and noticed the o2 readings went to normal switching and the car runs almost normal. Replace Maf sensor and still no change. If I unplug the vacuum line from regulator the 02 readings get much better. Replaced plugs and wires. Going to replace the fuel filter tomarrow. Checked for cracked exaust manifolds and no vacuum leaks.
When the car ran great, I never hooked up my scanner to see what the readings were like. So I do not have much to compare to. I would really like to get it running good with the parts I have on the car now.
I know a new chip would help the cold start idle. Does the Kenny bell chip need a 160 degree thermostat to richen the mixture? Is it possible the new pump does not have the capacity for my engine even at idle?
I could see if it went lean at higher rpm, but this is just idle. Like I said with the maf unplugged the car starts and idles normal with normal o2 readings. I have not been able to drive the car, because the power master unit is out. Accumulator issue. One other thing is I replaced the gas tank because it was leaking and it has fresh gas in it.
Any thoughts out there? I hope I have given enough info on this.
Thanks JohnT

Just a few things, first off do you have a Scanmaster? If not you should definitely invest in one, its the most important thing if you have a turbo buick. Secondly I'm assuming the car is all stock? Or at least has the stock MAF? This could be an issue as the original is old and likely is failing or has failed, and reman units are just as likely to be junk. I could be wrong but from what your describing I think the MAF is bad, by unplugging it the ECM is switching to a default setting. I would definitely look for a known good stock MAF or at least buy an LT1 MAF and translator. I would also consider replacing that Bosch pump with a higher flowing pump like a Walbro 340 or TT340 and installing a Hotwire kit. There have been a lot of improvements in chips as well, I would also suggest getting a chip from Eric at Turbo Tweak, this will greatly improve cold idle as well as overall drivability.

WELCOME PILGRIM!!!
Your regulator should be reading 43#'s w/vac. line off. An adj. will help w/maintain proper fuel pressure. If you have a stock reg. pinch the return line to increase the pressure and see if the leaness goes away. The reg. could be bad or the new pump is not up to par. The stock fuel pump was insuffient to begin with. The K-B chip was for 160* thermostat .As prreviously suggested, go w/a TT chip. K-B is old tech. not just idle.

The fuel pressure regulator is what is supposed to set the fuel pressure. Any additional flow from the pump get's dumped back to the tank by the FPR.

If you get that pump you are going to play hell finding some 30R10 fuel hose (no idea what that sippy cup straw is in the picure) to hook the pump to the hangar. When it's said and done it'd probably be cheaper to buy a pump kit from a Buick vendor that will come with the hose.
