Hi, everybody, I need help!!
I have a 1997 Buick Lesabre w/ 3.8liter that surges around 35 –40 mph and rpms oscillates 200 rpm when it surges (loss of power) and it is intermittent. If I tap the brakes , power is restored. I had the tranny power flushed 10k miles ago and had no problem. Now at 50k the problem is back and I have found a TSB on this problem on the web. TSB #87-71-75 states that the valve body needs to be replaced only on the ’97 Buick Lesabre, Pontiac Bonneville and Olds 88 with the 3800 engine VIN K because the bore for the valve that pressurizes the transmission fluid to lock up the converter was machined too large and as the miles get on the tranny the fluid bypasses the valve in the bore and causes the converter to come out of lockup. Immediately, the signal goes back to the valve to lockup and it is a continuous cycle of locking up and unlocking. Perhaps,I'm not sure, but at higher revs there must be more pressure to keep the valve pressurized. The cost for the part is around $550 for a updated valve body and who knows how much for labor. My question is can I replace the valve body with a used valve body from an older model (i.e. ‘96 and older) considering Buick screwed up the machining on only the ’97 valve body part and if possible which years fit my ‘97?
