Anyone here own/owned one? Looking at my next possible purchase and was looking to get someone who's owned one opinion.

How easy is it to modify and see results with the butt dyno? How far can you take this car? Good websites to visit.

Looking at the '99-'02 model

Thanks
Frank

You prolly already been there, but you'll prolly find more info on VW GTI message boards.

A buddy is still into those as I once was. He says that you can get a pretty beefy factory computer mod that covered under warranty. I won't believe it until I see.

I've heard the same thing about the ecm mod. I'm looking for a turbo charged AWD 4dr. I miss my AWD talon but it's wasn't practicle with a family so I sold it.

My choices are limited so I'm in the research phase. I'm also considering a WRX.

btw I grew up in JAX. East side near Baldwin.

They are great cars, I love mine. They are relatively inexpensive to mildly mod. Haven't done anything drastic, so don't know how much $ to go real fast. But it is the maintenance and simple things that will kill your pocket book. For example the cheap alternator costs $300, the bosch costs $500.
They are actually pretty easy to work on yourself, which you will want to do because the dealers are really outrageous at least here in Houston where there are only two dealers. If you want to do any work yourself the first thing you need is a VAG-COM

Your right about the cost of parts. I too have a buddy with an S4 and the parts are not cheap. I like the looks of the car but, I think I'm leaning towards an '02-'03 WRX for my daily transportation. Cheap and responds well to mods.

the A4 1.8 T's run 16's stock. a chip intake and ehaust will get them into the low 15s. a turbo upgrade will get them 14's and an intercooler will push you into the 13's.

my buddy w/ a turbo beatle got into the high 13's w/stock turbo, he broke a reccord for 1.8 T beatles by getting 13.9 w/ stock turbo on slicks.

A4's are heavier, so they need the turbo upgrade before they can get 13's most of the time.

I've been working on my buddies 1.8T Golf lately. It just ran a best ET and best MPH on Friday night at Cecil County... 13.82 & 102.9mph. That was with stock turbo, stock tires, cold air, boost controller, downpipe, and ECM mod.

Neat little car :)

all i can say is go test drive a wrx and a A4. The audi is by far the better car. It may be slower, but for the price the fit and finish is unbeatable. German cars are awesome. If you are looking at a new wrx, then look at S4's. I've looked at and driven a few. You could find a good deal for a 2000 for the low $20k's. And that car is the sh--. I really want one. Plus you have to take in account the exclusive factor in the Germans. Not a whole lot of people have em'. How many wrx's do you see out there?

S4's are sweet.
my buddy has a silver one

lowerd with down pipes exhaust chip and intake

fast as hell!

and its awsome, if he puts in 100 octane, the chip automaticly senses the octane increase and ups the boost and timing!!!

chip was 1300 bucks tho!!!

The ex (grrrr) drives a black '03 A4 1.8T. I enjoyed that car...very smooth, quick, fun to drive. She put a blowoff valve on it and she said a chip (never really confirmed it) and it was very quick. No sort of boost gauge though. I'd recommend one.

Well after much consideration I went and bought an '02 WRX. This is a fun car to drive. Especially here in the NorthWest where it rains all the time.

Thanks for all the replies.
