well like the title says i'm removing the ac/heat box from the car...
i got the lid off, heater core, accumulator removed, inner fender removed & all the bolts that hold the bottom of the box to the firewall removed & can move the box away from the firewall but its still attached to the vents & stuff inside the car, got the glove box outta the way & can see the vacuum hose harness to unplug & the cable controls to undue.... but what order or thing to i take loose next...

i don't wanna take more apart than i have to, or tear any thing up (this stuff will probably go back in the car when its done being a race car & returns to street duties)...
so where do i go now... do i hafta take the dash out to get the box out... any hints or help are greatly appreciated:)

i can take pics to show where i am, ... or if somebody has some that would help too.

Thank, Daniel :)

Please let me know if you were able to get all of the bolts off w/o the removal of the pass fender. I am looking into the same thing.

you only have to take the inner fender out & is probably one of the easier parts of the job, only takes 5-10 minutes..

Ok thanks was not aware the inner fender comes out. Guess I need to figure out how it comes out.

I didn't care about the box so I just beat the hell out of it and cracked it up, all the bolts are much easier to get too and it's fun this way.

Here is my post on T6p.com in the library on this mod.

"Just got done weighing the ac/heater box delete mod.

*Edited due to forgetting about the heater hoses, valve and clamps etc at 2 1/2lbs*

-34 1/2lbs ( includes air duct work in the car and heater hoses/clamps)

+1 1/2 lbs ( BuickGN delete plate )

You drop 33 lbs by going this route.

AC Core alone was 5lbs
Blower Motor and tiny chunk of the box was 5lbs
Air Duct work inside the car was 2 3/4 lbs

And for those who looking for a heads up on this delete, you will need a 7mm for pretty much everything and a 1/4 for the top section of the ac/heater box. The big bolts for the plate are 10mm and I broke the box up so it was not that hard to get at the lower 2 bolts near the passenger fender.

There are two vacuum lines you need to take off for the air duct work under the drivers side of the dash. Then move over to the passenger side and you need to drop the lower part of the air duct with a 7mm to get at the upper middle 7mm bolt that holds the air duct to the radio/counsel. After you loosen those two bolts and the vacuum lines you can slip out the air duct."

Im doing this as well and wondered is there anything attached to the ac box on the inside? I have everything done and loose but it feels like there is something attached on the inside?

i did this about five years ago by carefully removing all the screws and finishing the removal with a 5lb sledgehammer.

on another note, I regret removing it everytime i drive the car. in the end you have a car that is much louder on the inside, and has an extra 3 feet of engine harness that has to be coiled up and hidden inside. there is no defrost and there seems to be more dash rattles.

what happened to fast with class? keep your a/c and heat. save the stripped out street cars for the ricers.

Thats why you gotta get the non-ac box. Im not doing the delete plate. Have your doggy sniff around for one.

as per your request i forwarded your idea to my security team and rocky dug up a g-body non a/c box. unfortunatly i cant put it on my car because over the years, electronic items have moved into the available space.

Everything came out pretty easily with a hammer. :) It seems most get everything loose and then get hung up because of that one bolt behind the radio. Just pull...real f**king hard and it will all come out...in several pieces.

BTW, it is possible to fab your own delete panel and cowl panel out of a single sheet of steel from Lowe's. I did it with only a Dremel tool and some cardboard to make templates.

I'm a huge fan of removing all of the A/C and heating components since it makes everything easier to work on. You can:

  • feed wires through the firewall with ease
  • have more downpipe clearance
  • change plugs easily
  • remove valve covers easily
  • go to head studs if desired

tell me.....did you name him rocky before or after his balls were chopped?

I get to do two of these shortly, not looking forward to it.

Real street cars have A/C and are driven to the track.

+1, real men need heat though The ladies like it hot!

The real reason I took my A/C and heat out: Now she's forced to put her hands down my pants to warm them up when it's cold out.

Those of you who put in a non a/c heater box for G body cars, would that also give you extra room underhood for the dp clearance, changing #6 spark plug and pass side valve cover removal?
