Can you use a adjustable waste gate from a 87 on a 1984 even though the 84 uses 2 lines and the 87 has one?

Yes but..... there are issues.

The bracket is different and requires bending and maybe a new hole drilled to line up with an existing 84 hole on the compressor side of the turbo.

"I believe" the line nearest the turbo on the 84's doesnt need a line going to it. I've ran my car this way since I've had it. Looking at the car from the front, of the two lines going to the wastegate. The left line doesnt need to be hooked up, the right line needs to come from either the factory wastegate solenoid or any aftermarket manual boost controller you have. Once the car sees a certain amount of boost it applies pressure to the backside of the diaphragm and pushes the wastegate rod toward the turbo thus pushing the wastegate open.

Boost231, Jerryl step in if I totally butchered this up.

Thanks,

Jerry

you are correct. how ever, why not just make the 84 wastegate adjustable? only takes a few simple tools to make it adjustable.

X2 here. I have the instructions for mounting the 87 after market waste gate actuator on a hot air. Bolts right on along with closing one vacuum line off. I run this actuator with no mechanical issues at all. The downside of this actuator is that it rubs on the hoodliner. Let me know if you want the instructions e-mailed to you. Brad

I made my existing one adjustable also. It's an easy job. Most of the cost was a tap and die set which doesn't hurt to have around anyhow, and it was less than a new actuator.

Sounds right . . . The left line does not need to be hooked up, but, It decreases actuation time since it sees manifold vacuum.
The right line goes to the "Y Orifice". Look for the pics/links in the sticky
The 87 "single port actuator" will/may rub/damage on the hood insulator.

Sorry to jump in on this link but searched and seen this one first. I took off my waste gate actuator. Cut the rod and taped it. I tried a 1/4" bbut is appeared to small. The next largest size I had was a 5/16" which worked but the threads on the rod arent very deep. Is there a different size tap I need to use? Once this is done, How much longer with the adjustments should I make the rod? Dont want it to open the wastegate too far if its going to hurt something.
Thanks guys!
