I just replaced the rear shoes. The book says measure the drum inside diameter and adjust shoe and lining diameter .050 less by turning the start wheel.

Is there a way to do this without a caliper or measuring it?
thanks.

Most of the guidance I see posted on here says to adjust shoes until there is a slight drag.

I just adjust them until it's a little difficult/tight to get the drum on by hand.

I've always done the slight drag test as well. After bolting everything back up, I take the car out and put it in reverse a couple of times while letting the car roll back and hitting the brakes to finish it off. Never had a problem.
