Why? you ask, would I want to lower my boost. Unfortunately, I live in the Phoenix area of Arizona, and we have to take our cars through emissions inspections. I am new to the turbo GN's and need help with the proper way to adjust the waste gate to lower boost a couple of psi. (Temporarily of course). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

We need a bit more info - do you have an adjustable wastegate arm on the turbo? (a rod connected to the wastegate on the turbo elbow or downpipe and the other to a vacuum diaphram)

An adjustable wastgate will have a threaded end that you can adjust in or out.

The shorter the rod, the more boost and vice versa. You can make your own adjustable rod with a tap and some hardware.

You can also change your chip if your car still has that capability - not sure what mods you have.

What does an inspection have to do with lowering boost?

In AZ., we have to run the car on a dyno to simulate driving conditions. If the inspector is overzealous, with the throttle, he could be bringing in too much boost.

Emissions chip is more what you need for that scenario. Isn't the sniffer done at idle?

Ohh...... lower the boost then by all means!! Rule of thumb is one complete revolution adjusting the rod equals about 1 lb boost. Lengthen the rod (make it longer) to lower the boost. You can guage that by your boost level currently. If you don't have alky, I might suggest no more than 12 PSI at WOT.

I have an emissions chip in it from trubo tweek. TT also did my performance chip and has all the info to burn emiss. chip. My '87 GN has TE-44 turbo, comp cams hyd. 206, LT-1 MAF, 50lb. MSD injectors. I get about 15 PSI full throttle, no detonation issues at all, with the perf. chip and 111 racing fuel. (With the emiss. chip, I am running 91 pump and a cat).

I passed my emissions with 25lbs of boost, they only take up to 45-55mph, Ive never had one floor it and kick in the boost. They slowly accelerate. Try it once, if you fail you get free re-test next time

I've never had it tuned really, I bought my car last year and it passed 1st try 87 pump gas. I passed before I got the alky kit installed and TT tweak chip, so I'm not sure how clean it runs now. But the previous owner had it set at 25lbs of boost!! and found out the hard way by blowing a head gasket, timing cover seal, and ruining my turbo a few weeks after emissions.

The car came from Texas with no emissions equipment on it, so I had to find all the hoses and evap cannister then thru a cat on it. Also I'm not sure what chip I had before the TurboTweak was put in. Sorry, I wish I could help you more, I 'm still learning the GN engine as well.

You could try contacting Nick Micale in Phoenix, He installed my Alky Kit and had my Turbo rebuilt. Great Guy!!

Just unhook the wastegate rod...it will run like a slug but for emissions...who cares...I used to run with an emissions chip that also had valet mode...if they tried to get into ANY boost the car would basically shut down...not shut off just wouldn't go any faster...you could floor it and it wouldn't do anything...let off the gas and it would be fine again until you tried to boost...I always told them I have the turbo turned off..:D...special chip...they just looked at me funny...but I passed every time...here in AZ make sure you have a working CAT and EGR...or you won't pass...

I have a working CAT and EGR. My HC's and CO's are fine, but, it's the NOx that is giving me the issue right now. The standard is 2.5, my initial reading was 15.0, then I removed the RJC power plate, the person I bought it from had installed, then it went down to 5.3 now i have it down to 2.6. I turned the boost down to about 8-9psi from 15.

That's funny you got your car from Texas. So did I, from a guy in San Antonio. The car runs great, just having a little trouble with the AZ emissions standards....
