My plans of getting another regal to mod for a daily driver seem to be getting thwarted by gas prices. My 89 Grand AM with the "iron duke" 2.5 gets 20 mpg in the city runs great and has nothing wrong with it except a little surface rust and bad a/c compressor. What can I do to this car to get more power out of it without having to spend a bunch of money on getting another chip for it? I'm basically looking at a bolt on type of deal. The car is an automatic but I might swap a manual in it if I ever come accross a parts car. This may sound like a waste of money but I've heard of people making easy 170hp out of these things. COrrect me if I'm wrong but didn't they used to race these things and even had SUPER DUTY blocks and components for them? I would like to keep the Throttle body and computer in working order. Not being dumb, just wanna make my free daily driver fun!

well I have found a few sites nothing that has any individual power numbers. What would be the best bang for the buck? I already let the muffler fall off, put accel 8.8 race wires on, and disconnected the baffle on the air cleaner. Maybe a header? RAM AIR or an open element if I can get it to fit with a kand n filter? ENgine runs great, just want to do easy bolt ons but I don't want to waste the money if there is no noticeable gain.

1 - Yank the converter off the tailpipe. Easy 15-20hp on a 4 banger. Get a replacement muffler to keep it quiet.
2 - Run premium fuel. Engine runs cleaner, valves say clean, better compression, better fuel mixture because of clean injectors. Won't happen immediately, but it will happen. Fuel mileage will also improve.

buy a 2.4 twin cam cavier with a manual I am getting 28 mpg and ran a 15.3 bone stock with a 3 inch hole in the side of the stock airbox. you can bolt the olds or 90 beretta head/cams on and be at 190-200 hp. look bone stock smack the civis around sweet !

INteresting. Ive thought about gutting the cat out but I might wait until I get a muffler on first. I never new you could put the old style cam and head on the newer 2.4 and actually MAKE power. By the way, last night I noticed 93 octane is down to 2.56 and I didn't see a single ethonol sticker around the nozzle! Things are looking up!!!
