Another weird problem

On my '79 Turbo 231- Exhaust manfolds get red-hot after a few short minutes. Put a timing light on it and the timing light magically works without me even connecting it to the plug wire

I've never seen that before. So, I don't really know what the timing is.

Would retarded timing cause the manifolds t get red-hot that quick?

Would a bad ignition module or coil cause timing fluctations?

Bad ESC? I can start the engine with the knock sensor relay disconnected. The relay that allows the motor to start without the knock sensor retarding the timing.

It was a bad timing light.
