I have an 87 GN I'm the second owner.1st was a older woman that babied it to death.Has 71K on it and I've put maybe 800 on it in the last 6 years because no one can get it to run right.Car is going on Ebay soon fixed or not.or will trade up for a super nice one.

Problem when car gets hot it hesitates like a bitch. When cold and at WOT runs good not perfect and fast like it should but at least good. When it's cold it runs the best. Also it has been starting a little harder in the last few months or so.
Car was on a scan tool in the garage and everything was perfect!!!! over the winter this was so car was cold.
Things that have been replaced or checked w/ known good parts:
MAF
ECM
module
coils
pump
plugs/wires
Injectors cleaned
FFilter
The one wierd thing when the MAF was replaced it ran fine for like 20 mins then started acting up again.
I'm at my wits end on this car.I'm def. putting it on Ebay soon but I know it will sell for more if I can fix it somehow.
People constantly keep telling me whats wrong and they are positive this is it but they are all differant answers so who do you listen to.These are GN guys too.
If anyone is interested in my car and $$$ for a nice show one let me know.
Everyone else thanks for your help.

Have you been through the usual items like:
Reset IAC?
Set TPS?
Replace O2 sensor?
Check and replace vacuum lines as needed?

Has anyone mentioned the air temperature sensor yet?

It seems like as soon as the engine goes into closed loop and has to rely on info from all the sensors, one of them isn't up to the task.

Now for some unsolicited advice.
It's frustrating, I know. Even if you feel you'd be trading up by getting into another car, the same thing can happen to that one. Better off learning how to fix what you have or find a good mechanic. You'll need one for anything you drive eventually.

Good luck! Jeff

Holy cow! I just noticed your list of toys! I'd think you'd be on intimate terms with a good mechanic already!:D

Coolant Temp Sensor Bad?? Would make ECM go crazy hunting for correct fueling.

find someone with direct scan and go for a drive and record some files its the only way I know that someone long distance can help

all the money in replaced parts woulda been cheaper to buy a cheap laptop and direct scan or atleast t-link

The best and truest way to determine what is wrong is to get some good data. This would include scan tool, Fuel pressure, boost pressure and an EGT if you can. All this can help us determine the issue. I can tell you that although a replacement maf was done it could be a recond which may or may not work at best. The best thing is to find someone in your area that is good with these cars. I do not know of anyone directly in New York but Jack Cotton should not be that far away and is very good with these cars. It may be worth the trip and probably cheaper then paying for replaement parts. Hope this helps.

If you've had it for 6 years, then you should really throw in the towel. Bring it to a known Turbo Regal Specialist. Even if it costs a lot, to get it straightened out, you will still be better off. You will either save yourself further aggravation, and get to drive your car with it running great, or at the very least, when you do sell it, you will get more for it. Selling a car with '...runs like crap...' in the description doesn't exactly call for top dollar, and if it is like that you certainly can't claim that it runs good. The auction will fall through when they find out you were full of bologna. Good Luck.

Relace the o2 and get a new chip. Mine was doing the same and the folks that had it before me put a new fuel evap can, alt, timing chain, coil pack, module, plugs wires, fuel filter, ecm, chip.

When I get it the TPS if off and so of course the IAC was also. Then the chip was a crap program that precision tune screwed em with. All this and it was still rich like pig all the time, cold hiccup hesitation, no power like it should, just was a turd. I put a new 02 sensor(ac delco), caspers thumbwheel chip and just followed the gntype.org tune up/spring cleaning stuff and bam a new car. Just do your homework and you will be surprised what 2 little dinky things bieng off does.

For example I just picked up an 86 GN to restore for my wife and it had a part throttle miss and nasty rich all the time. Well I new the dude had just put a new timing chain on figured he did not put the cam sensor back in on the money. So It wound up being the cam sensor out of adjustment. Now it runs like a top.

Good luck

What kind of MAF did you replace it with? Stock? Remanufactured?

I wondered about the MAF too, but he said it was tested with a known good one. He also said it ran good for twenty minutes with that one on then was bad again. My question would be, did that MAF work well when put back on the car it came from, or was it crappy on there after the test as well?

I fought this same exact problem for YEARS and MANY dollars. I had three different shops try everything they could think of with no success. The MAF was replaced twice and didn't change a thing. When I was able to borrow a friends good MAF, it fixed it instantly! Each of the replacement (Remanufactured Cardone) MAF's were bad out of the box! I tried a new one from Advance, (The hour glass shaped one everyone says don't use.) and it runs MUCH better now. The Advance unit doesn't work quite as well at idle as the known good stock style I borrowed, but it's good enough for me.
Hope you get this nailed down cheaper than I did!

the MAF is probably a main culprit, if you can find any guys up there that are willing to let you borrow a translator and a LT1 or LS1 MAF that would rule that out for sure if it fixes it or not. if you can get a scan tool on it, right down the readings and post them up.

Wagon,
I had to laugh when I read your post.Who do you think did all the work to the car?The most respected GN tech in all of WNY.
I have a 94 T/A w/ the lt-1 but the MAF is ported and polished. Will this still work? One of my daily drivers is a 95 Z-28 could I just throw this one on?
Also I plan on selling both of the GN's by Spring because I will have a GN or A TTA show car by next spring. That is why I put the trading part in there.
Again thanks for the help all.
