hello; I went with red oak as I heard it was a good thing. There's a bunch of different ways to go and the RO is the way I went. The stairs are small so it not like a whole bunch of money. Are you a woodworker?

Carpenter for 20 yrs.
Oak is generally for interior use.
They will need to be varnished probably yearly if in the weather and with the varnish they will now become slippery when they get wet. I have never build exterior stairs out of oak, generally we build them out of cedar or treated limber and wrap them with a composite material

hello; How about a sealer? I think there clear and I would want a satin finish. Is there such a thing? What do you think of that?

As mentioned the type of wood and age is key and may be a factor in the stain regarding the "soaking factor" but IMHO the key factor is getting the color-tone right so it blends. I have helped friends stain/protect their porches/decks with great success.

Good luck.

hello people; Anyone tried spar varnish for this type of job?

hello people; I messed up my reds. The outside stairs are red cedar and I went for a red oak bead board in my place.
The same question thou. Should I stain or something else? I do want it to last a while.
sorry about that chief
