I just replaced my upper driver's side door pin and my door shuts like brand new again but there is a hell of a lot of rattle and bang going on inside the door.

I took the panels off and cleaned some loose chunks of body putty out of the inside the door (imagine that). I also noticed a couple little 10mm nuts that were loose that hold the bottom of the window to the horizontal bracket. Tightened them up. There is still a considerable amount of in/out play in the windows though when they are half way to all the way up.

I noticed the little cross arm inside the door was a little loose at the center pivot point.. but it looks like the center pivot is pressed in instead of screwed in so there was no immediate way of tightening it.

Are there any other adjustments that can be done to help out the rattle and the in/out window movement?

Thanks.
Tim S.

Poston or Kirban sells a rebuild kit for them about 90 a side I think and the sell a book by a window fixing guru, suppost to be good, haven't tried it but need too.

Thanks,

90 bucks huh? Hmm.

I think I can live with a little window rattle for a while. I need to save up for a new turbo because mine is starting to die.

The windows basically ride in their channels on the lower end. Tightening the glass to it's mounting bracket is about all you can do there. If part of the mechanism is loose, you could possibly "stake" the rivets to try and better secure them; the scissor arm will usually be loose. The windows get pressure from the belt molding as well as a couple of felt-covered guides at the top of the door shell when closed. This is where you are going to affect the wobbly effect of the glass. Those two upper felts, if memory serves me correctly, have slots to move up and down in. Adjusted too high and the window will stick out from the weatherstripping; too low and it will wobble and flop around. Play with different positions there and don't fear shimming the backside with a thin washer (or thick if appropriate) should there be a need. Since the glass is curved, try to envision how to complete that curve at the top of the door shell. Sometimes rattles can come from the lock rod, remote outside mirror cable, or the mirror itself.

Yes, I'm doing it right now. The rattles are minor. If you have to adjust the glass position get ready for a hell of a ride.

The book is pretty good although in the end, getting the glass seal takes so acceptance of your destiny.

Yah.
The glass positioning was a b!tch. We finally got it though. It seals pretty nicely with the exception of the outside top edge of the window where the stripping is pretty worn away. It pretty much passes the dollar bill test though.

If I remember correctly it was $90 for both sides. I believe they were $49-50 per side.

It took me a while to accept the fact they the factory used sealer/adhesive to force the weatherstrip out against the glass especially on the front lower edge at the door and the upper rear top at the corner.

The book is good, but it didn't voice that little detail enough.

I used Kirban's book to do mine a few years ago and the only thing that stopped me from getting it perfect was the worn weatherstrip. Just follow the book and be patient.

Mike [:-)

The book was good, but I think it left out a lot of the interaction of the adjustments. I concluded that the best solution is to leave the glass alone and adjust the weatherstrip.

Hi Tim,

Just got your phone message, but it's kinda late. Figured you called because you needed something! ;) I have that book if you want to borrow it... just let me know. Does take patience to do, but it helped my 146K mile GN windows quite a bit!

It's certainly better than the service manual, that's for sure.

Anyone know where to get the adhesive release stuff?

Jay!
I don't "want" anything I swear! Unless you wanna give it to me.. muhaha. Just trying to ketchup with yah dude.
