Anybody have a pool?

I'm having an inground pool installed in a couple of weeks. I was wondering if anyone has had experience with their own pool and pool heater. My pool is 36'x16' with a depth of 3' to 6'. I want to get a heater, but I don't know what brand or if bigger is better. Any help would be appreciated.

I own a pool/spa service and repair business and run a route with 105 pools in southern CA. Your question is a common one.

I'd be glad to help. I'll need to know some more info about your pool before I can help. Is this a pool and spa combo, or just a pool? Do you know how many return lines in the pool. What size plumbing, 1 1/2" or 2"? Do you know the size of the gas line? Do you have plans to run a salt system or will you be using chlorine tabs or liquid chlorine? What model and what size pump are you using?

I generally like Raypak heaters. They seem to have the fewest amount of problems in my experience, but things are always changing in the industry. My heater guy who does a lot of new installs tends to favor some of the later model Hayward heaters, but it depends on the application.

Haven't talked to you in a while. That TTA you bought sure sounds like a beauty. There is only one problem though. I think the car doesn't have enough miles for its age. Sounds like it's time for you to make a west coast road trip!

All I really know is they can get EXPENSIVE! Had a friend here in AZ that moved into a new house - it had a pool heater. I forget if it was gas or electric.

He ended up with a $1000 utility bill. Needless to say, it did not get used anymore.

Depending on where you are at - you may look into solar heating. I have heard of people here that swim all year long with the solar heating.

Oh, don't get a black bottom pool if it gets real warm in the summer. I was working in Dallas and the apartments we went and swam at had black bottom pools. It was so hot during the summer, that you were better off OUT of the pool. I mean, it was miserable.

Thanks for the replies. To be completely honest, I don't have all the technical specs for the pool yet. The pool is an inground fiberglass pool made by Alaglass. I don't know the size of the piping that will be used or the number of return lines. I believe the filter will be a catridge type. The pump is a 1 hp Pentair model. I do not know for sure what type of clorinator the company is installing, but I think it will use tablets.

Just finished my pool about a month ago. We have a Jandy / Laars 400,000 btu gas heater. Seems to be pretty efficient we heated the pool for 4 days from 49* to 85* plus heated the spa about 10 times and the bill went up $100.00. Our pool is approx. 22,000 gallons and it took 13 hours to bring it up to 85*.

I am not sure if you are aware but it does get into the 60's here in the winter

Alright guys, I need to shift my train of thought. I just received two estimates to run gas for a NG heater.....both were right about $3000. I'm now thinking that a heat pump might be a better idea. It would cost about 1.5 ito 2 times what the gas heater would cost, but I think it would be cheaper to stay away from the gas. What are your thoughts? Who makes a good heat pump? Do they do a good job of heating? I'm in No. VA if that gives you an idea about my climate conditions. Keep the posts coming guys, I appreciate the help.

Be intereesting to see the next few months of bills for gas,,my gas man kept estimating the gas every month (probably from his couch,then they actually did a reading and my bill was $900 off

Owning a pool suck BIG time ,,high gas bill ,high electric bills to run pumps, Chemicals ,,time cleaning the pool..

We never enjoyed our pool,,thats the reason the house goes up for sale next month is because the pools SUX,,,trust me.......always cleaning ,chemicals pumps bills ....WE have owned this house 2.5 yrs and thats enough............had it ,done ......
