Okay,

Talked with another fellow TR owner that I talked to a couple of weeks ago at the track. During this time he had to go in for PA emissions. Today he come up to me and told me he failed the first two times with 3X the state standards. I should point out he has no cat, blocked off EGR and a bunch of go fast goodies (makes sense why he failed!). Well the second failed time the guy at the emissions place said bring it back in a couple of days and he would help him get it through. The emissions guy put a paper-clip jumper in the upper right two pins. He told me the car ran like crap at this point but went through with flying colors! Actually half or less the allowable on all levels. What the hell is this all about? I didn't get up with him again after that and he wanted my e-mail address so next time I will exchange with him. He told me PA is more strict than MD's IM-240. Anyone want me to get the pre and post emissions from him? Does this hurt anything? I will try mine normal to see if goes through but this will be in the back of my head if it fails if you know what I mean:D

When I had to pass the MD test ( I was always given an exemption everytime) make sure you go to a "dyno test" location and you need to have an adjustable IC scoop! adjust it so low that it will not clear the rollers and explain that it is stock. Everytime i was told to pull around and go in to receive the 2 year exemption for the same cost as the test. This was done on a stretch IC for it to work.

Jumping A-B puts you in ALDL mode.
Lean, high idle, fixed timing.
It can, help with some cars, but I eouldn't count on it.

Better to do the old standbys.
Hot thermostat.
set the idle up a little
get the engine really warmed up ie 20 min freeway run
some fuel additive not octane booster, but emission pass additive.
Fresh plugs.

Emissions chip.
Some chips add alot of timing at idle and toss the HC levels

1. Change your oil and drive directly to the test facility
2. Unplug the middle relay on the d/s [high speed fan relay] and use your fan switch to keep it just under 200° prior to starting the test.
3. Run the highest, unleaded, octane available.
4. JL, street chip for your injectors
5. FP down 10 from normal
6. Borrowed Cat...if you blow it the first time.

Worked for me.

PS: Don't disregard #1 as retoric, info from the test facilatator.

Emissions waiver

I also just went to get emissions test done, when they saw my innercooler scoop they gave me a 2 year waiver. I have a bgc 21 row ic. Test station was in glen burnie, md.

SMOGGIN IT??

Some states have a permanent exemption for cars that have "non OEM" engines. In GA. we can get this exemption. We have to have an officer inspect the car and sign off that it's not the original engine.
I haven't tried mine yet, but am working on finding the exact criteria for "non OEM" status.

It may be as simple as checking w/ your states EPA or DOT, to see if it's available.
Then there's the ability to bolt the cat in, change the oil, and get into the FAST system and "load up" a winning combo!!..;) ;)
T-70, 95#r's, race cat, ATR system and WHAMO another yr of "enviornmentally friendly" street racing!!!

Is there also an exemption if you say you are driving under a certain amount of miles a year also? ;) Frank

I dont think so, at least here in pasadena,md. I only drive my 87-t about 1000 miles a year and was told that there was no excemptions for limited mileage, unless you are something like 70 yrs old you can get a senior citizens waiver.

question...

how does making the engine run really hot help pass emissions??? i guess if i wanted to pass emissions i could just turn my coolant fan off? then it would run 180-190 with my 160 thermostat

i was also going to drop the fuel pressure way down and put on a cat for insurance...i would think with a te-44 turbo and 50 lb injectors i would be safe?

In PA, you have to pass the IM240 test initially then after that if you drive UNDER 5000 miles OR have Classic tags you won't need emissions testing anymore..

yea the paper clip trick worked for me too... only prob is some stations won't pass if the ses light is on. A piece of elec. tape fixes that little prob =)

I just failed the Texas emissions test....

Failed it, pretty badly.
As soon as it was finished I noticed the fuel pump vacuum line was disconnected. Then I saw the one for the EGR was bad, too. And a couple others....
I assume these would make the car fail, so I'm planning to replace them all and try again.
If that doesn't work I'll try the paper clip thing...
