How usefull or important is the Air temp sensor? Is the uppipe the best location?

Air temp sensor is very important in a turbo car. You want to measure the temp of the compressed air charge, so the uppipe is a good spot.

I'd go with the word critical, with the disclaimer, of how good you are at tuning. As the I/C saturates with heat, the IAT will rise, and so will the likelyhood of detonation.

I drilled and tapped a hole im my upper plenum, for mine. Just deep enough for the sensor to be in the air flow (from the pass side).
