is there any machine work required to install these or can you just bolt them on and go?

The mains will need to be align honed at a minimum, and possibly align bored. Obviously the engine needs to be removed and disassembled to do this. If you are doing a rebuild and want to strengthen your bottom end, you might consider a girdle instead.
