Has anyone removed the body side moulding on their GN without problems? Any tips?

Some of us can't because it was riveted on! Believe that was how some of the dealers installed them.

Pretty simple really.

The OEM stuff sticks on using a grey "putty". RIVETED stuff is not OEM - another myth exploded.

Do it on a good, hot day. Use a hair dryer if it helps. Prep Sol will clean up and residue. Go slow!

Mine were just stuck on with 2-sided tape. Here's a trick, Take some fishing line (the stronger, the better) or some thin gauge wire and wrap the ends either around two bolts or your fingers and place it between the molding and the metal. Now gently work the fishing line up and down in a sawing motion, you can work your way down the side of the car and you will cut the molding off. Once you're done you will have to go back with some solvent and cut the adhesive. Let me know if you have any questions.

True, riveted stuff is not original, but myth or no myth the fact is there are a lot of GNs out there with these add on moldings. It's important to know what you are getting in to before diving in. My moldings were a dealer add on and much to my surprise/disgust I found rivets after one of the moldings came loose. Not a big deal on a daily driver car, but when you pull the moldings off for a paint job, all of a sudden the price goes up when you decide to have the holes filled.

My advice is to take a look at another local GN that you know to be original and compare the moldings on your car to the "known" original car before doing anything.

Here's a pic. of the factory stuff.

You can pretty much tell it's not riveted upon close inspection.

Can't see how that wouldn't leave a line on the car after 18 years however.

If you have the glue on style mouldings, when you pull it off, the paint that was under the moulding will be damaged by the adhesive. You'll always have this damaged paint stripe where the moulding was. You can't polish it off........well, ya can, but the blemished paint will re-appear in a couple days. Magic. That could be the least of the problem. If there was paintwork done on the car, you have at least a 50/50 shot some "expert" painter, masked off the moulding, and used it as a paint border. In this case, you'll have a paint line right down the center of your door. :D
