Have anyone experienced a problem with a car not goin over 17lbs of boost? Almost everything has been changed. Any solutions?

He has tried swapping turbos, intercoolers, cylinder heads with good springs, and went from an external gate to a THDP and stock adjustable wastegate. No exhaust leaks, intake is tight and runs good. Not even 1500 miles on the engine. ATR single shot and no cat. Just won't go over 17psi:confused: Even tried taking the vac line off of the compressor housing to see if it would go past 17psi but it didnt. Powerlogger and boost gauge both agree.

get a better wastegate actuater

my car is doin the same thing and i believe that by trimmin a little off the threaded end of the rod it will make it shorter thus more boost...theoretically...i hope it works ill let you know

Need to know more about the car. What turbo? What torque convertor? What about the other Powerlogger readings? What chip is he using? Does he have room to safely cut back on fuel delivery (lower fuel pressure or pull fuel through the chip)?

I almost wish I had this problem. Mine's the opposite--I can't keep my boost low enough to safely run 93 octane and I drive it on the street a lot. Was doing some hard pulls the other day to show a friend of mine what my transmission is doing (flaring on the 2-3 shift) and I saw 23 psi on one of the pulls. Sucks having to run the really expensive gas *all* the time...:frown:

Ok the car has a 49 turbo now with thdp stock wastegate, 3500 stall, 83lb inj, turbo tweak chip, i have ran the car o2 readings were lower 800's pulled some fuel out got o2's down to mid 700 no knockstill have plenty of fuel to play with

Ideally O2s should be in the upper 700s but if you feel you have plenty of room to pull fuel or add timing then give it a try. This is where a wideband O2 sensor would be good to have, and I need to get one one of these days too. Having too much fuel can kill performance.

That convertor is way loose for a TA-49...

hey are you usin the HD actuater or a standard one? simple question but thought id ask cause the HD one cant go any lower then 19lbs

No, I have a standard adjustable actuator. I bought it new from Full Throttle, and it worked fine. This was when I still had my stock intercooler. When I bought an new downpipe with an external wastegate, I sold the actuator to another board member that lives close to me, and eventually bought his turbo from him and it included the same actuator. The problem started when I installed a Mark Jackson SLIC that was borrowed from a friend. I have been through 2 turbos, 2 downpipes (internal and external gates), and 2 intercoolers (both Mark Jacksons--I took my friends out and installed another one that I bought) since then and I've had this same problem all along. I also recently installed a new torque convertor. My signature is up to date as far as what my car has now, but you'll have to check my other post above to see it. As far as I've seen my signature won't show up when I post from my Blackberry like I'm doing now.

So you did have boost over 17lbs before you changed the intercooler? Id pressure test the cooler, see if maybe its got a leak.

Well Guess IM gonna join the (no boost over 17#s) club.

Just started last week, been troubleshooting it ever since, reset the WG then Rjcbc, got to have a pin hole in my IC

Subscribed anyway

Do you have a manual boost controller? This problem happened to me once at 15 psi, and it turned out that somehow the ball inside the boost controller(ball and spring setup) made its way into the spring. I took the ball out and tightned up the top of the spring put it back together and viola!

The original poster here never said that. I was the one that said that once I went from the stock IC to the Mark Jackson IC I couldn't keep my boost low enough to run 93 octane. Same with the other Mark Jackson IC I bought and installed. It's like the intercooler is flowing more air than the rest of the intake or engine can handle.

I would remove the valve covers, remove the rocker arms, and pressurize the system from the outlet of the turbo with like 25 psi from an air compressor. It will start to hiss from somewhere. If it doesn't it must be a cylinder sealing issue.

This is what i did, didnt have boost for 2years! Get some soapy water in a spray bottle, and spray all over the engine, had a lot of boost coming from around the EGR! Then i found that valve guides was letting boost get pass valve stem. Just keep trying.

yup viola, my issue solved.

Happened to me as well. Could not boost above 15#'s. After checking and rechecking a whole lot of everything, it turned out to be my exhaust was too restrictive for my new turbo. Unbolt your exhaust from your downpipe and see what boost level you get. Easy enough to check anyway. Good luck.
BYW I also had a 3" single shot, it now has a cut out and I have 24#'s of boost!
