let me start by saying NO i dont have a boost gauge YET. Im a slacker. anyway i was just wondering why my boost doesnt kick in until 65 or so thats when the light comes on and i can hear the turbo spinnin. I have the adjustable wastegate rod and wondering if extending it will increase the boost or shortening the rod. I have no real tools to measure with Just trial and error. when i make an adjustment i drive around and see what changed in the acceleration ETC,. The throttle body idle control? is adjustable correct its a Torx head screw with spring. If this is loosened does it affect boost? what if i tighten it a little? whats a good combo of loosening/tightening throttle and extend/retract actuator? I measured the rod length when i adjust it and it was set at 6 7/8 or 15/16 from the actuator to the center of the rod end. does this mean anything to anybody.Your help is greatly appreciated.

cool a md guy, first to up the boost you have to make the rod shorter. If you mean you are not starting to boost tell 65mph then some thing is wrong.

Can you give use some info on the car is it all stock or does it have any thing dont to it. Do you have a adj fuel press reg . If you are getting a bad boost problem like that then check all the vac lines real good and make sure there are not any real bad header leaks.

write back and i'll try to help yea the best i can.

ok first off if you don't have any way to measure boost or monitor knock and o2 millivolts i don't suggest messing with the wastegate rod.unless you like changing head gaskets:eek: .

next, the torx screw on the throttle body is not an idle adjustment screw.the idle is set by the chip.all you are doing by messing with it is opening the throttle blade and messing up your tps setting.

the dash boost lights are worthless, ignore them.

so basically you're jerking yourself off until you have a way to actually see what is happening(boost gauge, scantool, etc).

later,sean

Another MD guy here and I actually lived in Hollywood a few years when I was a kid. I agree with WFO... at the very least get a boost gauge so you have an idea what kind of boost you have and I wouldn't even up the boost until you know more about your cars. You are already off to a good start by posting here.

Very true, If any thing leave the waste gate turned out so you dont over boost tell you get a boost gauge.

I posted up top under my brothers name jadams, first i would check all the easy things . If you dont have a fuel gauge try to get one to hook to the fuel fail you will need this. Check all the plugs , wires , make sure your getting good fuel , i would be ok to put a new fuel filter on if you dont know much about the car since you just bought it. Check all the headers i no they have cracks , hell they all do. I would really check the vac line or replace all of them to make sure they are not dry and cracked. Vac leaks will kill your boost big time . try to get a boost gauge , fuel gauge , knock gauge to be safe, and most of all a scan tool to see what your car is up to.

Before you jump up in boost you should really get a adj reg , and a fuel pump would be nice if you can swing it.

If you did not live so far i would come over and give a hand. Me and jadams are from the glen burnie area.

thanks crazy and bwallace i appreciate the reply. ill start lookin at that stuff tom. another thing, I was lookin through the poston catalog and came upon TPS-TEC and the little story. as i read it described the car EXACTLY. The guy i bought it from said "it shifts kinda hard and you can adjust it right here" and pointed in the throttle bodys direction. If you have the poston catalog look at the TPS TEC and youll see exactly what Im talkin about. It doesnt sound like a good thing to adjust the TV cable but im assuming that when he rebuilt the engine and had the tranny done he or somebody did this for the crisper shift affect. what can i do, without any special tools to set the TV cable back the way it was originally?? Or do i need somthing special? Its sounds like that is one of the big problems with this car. I hope i can fix it with little trouble.

First the tv cable, yea you do want to set it the right way before your tranny takes a dump. Very easy to set, leave the car off , push in the little d shaped tab and pull the tv cable back to the drives side so its in all the way, you get in the the car and push the gas down all the way and it will set its self to where it should be . Or go to gnttype. com or org and it will tell you every thing , great place for info and how to do things.

2nd the tps tec, i have one and its good for if you dont know how to use a meter or have a scan tool but i dont think you will get any thing from it. It will tell you how to set the tps on your car at gnttype to. Check all your vac lines and all and get back with use and we will help you out with it.

Save the money on the tps tec and get a fuel press reg or some gauges first so you dont blow it up with the boost.

let me know bud:)

thanks crazy i read the adjustment article on gnttype and it sounds pretty simple. I m gonna try it tomorrow. vac lines good fairly new lookin. I changed the spark plugs last weekend wit Bosch platinum plugs and msd wires. ill post tom night after the operation Thanks again

hate to see you waste your money, but you need to take those platinums out.they may work great for grandma's caddy, but they're not for your turbo car.:)

ac cr43ts,gapped at a tight .035".

Suggestions--Newbie

Suggest you go to gnttype@gnttype.org and register. Then spend a few days reading all the tech info and searching the archives and printing a guide to tuning your Regal.
Once that's done, buy the following BEFORE you put those tuning ideas to work:
1. Adj fuel press. reg.
2. A good quality fuel press. ga.
3. A good VOM.
4. Walbro 340 pump and hotwire kit.
5. A good scan tool such as the new TURBOLINK.
6. A good boost ga., oil press ga., H20 temp.ga.
7. A set of AC CR43TS plugs and gap them at a tight .035.

The above are basic tools to help you avoid blown headgaskets, and membership in the DOTC club!!
NOW, tune, tune, tune!!!Have fun doing it!
HTH!!

The printing out a book is really benficial we did this about 3 years ago, one for the intercooled car and one for the hot air (buy a notebook and 3 hole punch) this saves a lot of headaches and time looking for stuff. I recommend this to everyone and you don't really need to register on the site to print info but it's nice if you see who else is in your area.

I 2nd the plugs , get them out as soon as you get the money the cheaper ones work ten times better. And like the guys said tight .35.

let us know.:)

adjusted the tv cable and the shifts are sooo much nicer. almost fells like a little more pickup. gonna gap my bosch for now and next weekend try to get the ac's in. could a fuel pressure regulator be clogged? if so how do i clean it? if its clogged do i just need a new one? tryin to get budget together on this beast. Thanks for all your input guys.

Glad to hear the tv cable worked, As for the fuel press reg , it should not be dirty if theres a fuel filter on it. Will can start saving for a adj reg because you will need one when you turn that boost up down the road. It could be the fuel sock in the tank if its a stock pump.

car has never stopped running just ran a little sluggish there for a while. yeah i think its runnin pretty damn good. few minor things ive been plannin on changin/upgradin since posting. ive sealed the turbo pipes with that copper goop this weekend im gonna look at the croosover pipe and see how its lookin maybe get to the fuel filter. speakin of that, i was researchin how to change the fuel filter on gnttype and could only find the procedure for 86-87. Is it basically the same? just takin precaution so i dont make a mess or worse! any tips are appreciated.
