im goin to look at a few turbo buicks soon, and im just wondering, what exactly should i be lookin for? i REALLY do not want to get screwed over.

Thanks for any help

Jim

Contact Dennis Kirban @ Kirban Performance and buy his book on buying used T/R's. It's excellent and will answer all of your questions. Dennis has bought and resold hundreds of T/R's over the years. (215)348-8571

JimmiJ what are you looking for as far as miles, options, price etc...
Do you want really low miles or higher miles?

thanks for all the advice. that one article on ttype.org will help me out a lot....

currently i have contact with a guy who might sell me his 87 ttype thats been sitting for two years, but hes done all the maintenance on it in the past month and says it runs perfect. the only problem is the driver door needs to be repainted and the lower part of the passenger rear quarter panel needs to be repainted....

5700 for a ttype with only 45k miles on it..............

thought it was too good to be true but when i go to check it out ill have some clue to figure out if it is or not.

Id like one with low miles but i dont think my budget will be able to accomodate my desires.

and turbo scott---im lookin for an 87 GN or ttype, doesnt matter which, but it HAS to be black, absolutely has to be. im lookin for something that has relatively low miles because i will be using it as my daily driver at least for this summer, i refuse to drive it in the winter though. If its a ttype then i would like ttops but its not a huge deal. So basically im looking for a black 87 GN or ttype around $7000, but if the search continues for a while, then the money ill have to spend will go up

Spend a little extra at first and you'll be ahead of the game

Figure out what your goals are with the car ie. what you care about. Do you want an ultrafast TR or one that looks excellent or both. Then go out and find one setup like you want and pay the extra cash for it. You can get a complete car with all the mods you want for a whole lot cheaper than putting it together yourself. The T your looking at now sounds like it needs paint. About 2500 minimum for a good job outsourced. Now your up to 8200 and your looking to mod it. You could tie up 15K in this car easy when you could have found a completey restored and modded car for around 10-13k. Anyway heres some stuff to think about off the top of my head

1. Paint -- car with fresh professional paint job is definate plus original paint sucked on these cars any car with original paint is probably gonna need paint soon add at least 2500 in future cost for a car with marginal paint

2. Engine -- Fresh Professionally rebuilt engine by reputable builder is a definite plus. Car with marginal motor or minor running problem could be major. Engine gonna cost you 3000 to 4000 depending on what you want

3. Radiator, hoses etc.-- Stock radiator is gonna be trashed ... about 150-250 for this, look for new radiator on car

4. Engine management along with injectors--- Maf translator setup or Maxeffort and injecotors already on car will save you about 800-1200

5. Recipe Mods to level you want to run --- add em up, a totally stock car is gonna need a ton of stuff depending on how fast you wanna run why not get a car that already has a upgraded fuelpump, hotwire, adj regulator, cold air etc etc . Easy 1000 here for the basic stuff.

6. Interior -- You can spend 1500 easy on a car with marginal interior

7.Fresh Transmission built and beefed up by professional builder--- if the cars got the stock tranny you'll tear it up in a hurry with those new engine mods 2000 for this

8. Gauges -- get a car with boost gauges, egt scanmaster turbolink etc. already installed save ya 400-700

9. Intercooler Turbo --- If you wanna go real fast .... front mount and big turbo will help easy 2 grand

10. T-tops -- stay the hell away from these unless you just have to have them if you do ... require brand new seals and check for leaks and rust big money here if you need seals or rust repair

Anyway Thats alot of cash for all this stuff that you will want. Money wise your better finding a car where someone else has already bought everything and installed it. You will save 1000's.

Good Luck

ALOT of Jack tied up in this car!!! Just wish the motor was built be perfect.

Heres another

Bad A$$ 87 GN f/s, pics inside
I hate to do this but I'm losing my storage again and don't have the time or energy to find a new garage.

-87 GN, 47,000 original miles, solid roof, pw, pdl, tilt, cruise, pwr-seat, a/c (converted to 134A), concert sound, remote mirrors, posi

-Custom two-tone paint (approx. $5k) by Donovans Custom Auto-Body in Westport, Ma. The car was completely stripped to bare metal before paint. Repaint is base coat, clear coat. Paint color is PPG straight black and the silver is the factory color from the 87 Turbo T's. All the emblems have been removed, even the one on the grille. New: ATR glass bumpers (front and rear) grille, headlight bezels, marker lights, parking lights, parking light bezels, weather stripping, door sill plates. Door handles, door and trunk locks, wheel well trim, and all the window trim were removed, glass beaded and painted factory gm black.

-Interior was completely stripped, dash pad was replaced (it had some small cracks from the Florida sun), as was the upper dash panel. All the grey plastic trim was removed and repainted the factory GM color. Car has a 145mph speedo, Scanmaster 2, Autometer 2 1/8- tach, boost and electronic fuel pressure gauges in a Lotek 3 gauge A-pillar pod, oil pressure, and water temp gauges in the console under the radio, ATR air/fuel meter with an audible knock detector, in car bleeder valve for boost adjustment, line lock and high/low fan switch mounted inside center console. Trunk is done with a Kirbans 5 piece trunk kit.

-Motor was originally done by J&E Performance engines in Florida although I did have Cottons go through it last year to check for any problems. Stock block, standard crank, JE forged pistons, rods, ported and polished stock heads, T-65 turbo (polished housing), 50# inj., stainless THDP, ATR Dual 3" stainless exhaust (with hand polished tips), polished 65mm throttle body and dog house. Engine has about 4k miles on it. Also has Buick Motorsports valve covers, all the breathers, 14" K+N filter and about $2k in chrome (some custom, some from Kirbans). Jay Carter 93, 100 and 116 (never used) go with the car.

-Trans. was built (not sure by whom) using Art Carr internals and has a Precision Industries "Zero Stall" l/u converter (which I added last year maybe has 1k miles).

-Suspension is done with Eibach Pro-Kit springs, QA-1 12 way adjustable shocks, Hotchkis front and rear sway bars, Hotchkis upper and lower control arms, both air bags, pinion snubber

-Wheels are custom made polished aluminum 17"x8" Boyd Coddingtons wrapped in 255/40/ZR17 Nitto Extreme ZR's (front), and 275/40/17 Nitto Drag Radials (rear)

-Brakes are the Baer 13" Track kit with drilled, slotted and zinc washed rotors, 4 piston calipers (red in color to match the pistripe on the car)

-Car went a 12.03 @ 109 with a TE-44, 40lb. injectors, stock downpipe and flowmaster exhaust. Hasn't been back to the track since but has mid-low 11 sec. capabilites.

-Car is in absolutely awesome condition in and out. Show winner and definitely magazine quality. All major mods (paint, wheels, tires, brakes and major motor upgrades) were all done last year and have maybe 1k miles on them.

-Known problems: small 1.5" scratch on passenger rear quarter (parking light bezel fell off on my first drive after the repaint, got kicked up by the front tire and hit the quarter), the drivers side trunk spoiler piece (on the quarter) has a small crack in it from me over tightening it, passenger side window is slow since the new weather stripping was installed, factory radio and speakers sound awful, under big boost (20+ psi) the trans. is starting to loosen up on the 2-3 shift, 1-2 is still rock solid and will leave 25-30 ft. of rubber, normal driving the trans. is perfect.

-This is my honest description of this car. All known problems have been disclosed. I have nothing to hide. Anyone who has seen this car can vouch for its quality and near perfect condition. I hate to sell it but this is my last option. I have all receipts since I bought the car. I figure I have about $30k invested. Car hasn't been driven since last October, she's only been started every month to make sure the battery didn't die.

-Asking $17,995 obo.Pics are in my sig. I can get more if needed for serious buyers.

You could offer 15K for this one. Would be an excellent deal. No way could you get the T your looking at this nice for 15k. This one would be perfect if it had a built tranny.
