To anyone familiar with the C5 Corvette Getrag differential, was wondering if the pinion gear splines go all the way through the pinion gear? By removing the rear cover plate on the differential can you see through the pinion gear and splines (with transmission removed) or just the back of a bearing assembly? Looking to see if a splined shaft could be installed from the back side (cover removed) to drive the gears.

Although I am sure that there are plenty of Corvette experts on this board, you might wnat to post this query over on www.corvetteforum.com
if you do not get a resonse here

Thanks, interesting site will have to mill around over there. If anyone else knows anything about these diffs, let me know. Though chances are slim, am looking to retro fit a Getrag or possibly S-10 4X4 front diff to the turbo Riviera th325-4l transmission. While ratios 3.15 and 3.36 diffs are available, posi is not, neither are options to beef them up.

Thanks for the post over there, will have to check back for response,if any.

I have a couple of diffs laying around. I'll look today for you. I don't think it will bolt up to the Riv trans. The bolt pattern is different. If I remember correctly, doesn't the Riv diff have a bracket bolted to the top that also bolts to the side of the engine block?

Had a couple of responses there, just what I was looking for, spline goes through pinion to other side, thanks again for the post. End of response was funny, they wonder if I was doing some kind of Monster Garage or Junkyard Wars, sure feels like it sometimes! Actually my motor/trans (turbo V6/TH325-4l) is being installed mid engine just like the 68-70 Corvette prototypes XP-880/XP-882, just need to upgrade the differential, the C5 Getrag hopefully.

MG8T7GN, if you still get a chance to check that would be great. If not too much trouble could you take some crude measurments (approx.)

*Centerline of input shaft/pinion, to left and right sides of housing

*Centerline of output shafts to rear (service cover)

If these measurements are what I am looking for, would you have a trashed Getrag housing to sell? I would be looking for a bad one first to do fit checks. You are right that the Getrag will not just bolt up to the Riv trans, but I can design and machine some adaptor plates. While I am asking, what spline does the pinion shaft use, 27 like other GM? Thanks.

I can do this tommorrow for you. For this measurement, do you mean to the to the outermost edge of the axle seals? All of the diffs I have are assembled. I don't have any apart right now if yo need that dimension from the shaft centerline to the edge of the case minus the side covers. But even that diminension I could approximate for you.

I not sure what dimension you're looking for here. To rear of the tin cover?.

I'll count the splines on one of the trans we have. Unfortuneately, all of the diffs are spares for the race cars we have. I think there might be a 3.23 in the trailer the boss may want to part with. It's a fully assembled unit. It's tagged with the year and mileage of the car it came from.

Mark, correct on both measurments, on the cover tin though measure to the surface it mounts to, again close is good enough , +/- 1/2 inch will get me in the ballpark. Using a tape measure on the outside of case will work good enough, thanks again.

Spline count is 27.

Overall depth of diff from mounting face at trans end to the rear of the tin cover over pinion is 11 1/2".

The tin cover itself is about 3/4" thick.

The width of the diff from axle seal to axle seal is 14".

From the centerline of the axle shafts to the rear of the tin cover is 7 7/16".

Thanks for the trouble of getting the info, it is exactly what I was looking for. The only problem I see so far is the diff case is a bit wide at the axles but may be workable. At this point will have to look around for a damaged diff housing to fit up (if there even are any), hate to get a good one and it just can't be made to fit. I am on my own at this point, thanks again eveyone.
