My cam sensor taps. Almost sounds like a mild valve tap. I know it's pretty common. Is there any way to fix it to quiet it down?

I never heard of that, does it have anything to do with the factory internals?
I bought the RJC Cam sensor kit, I dunno if it has a dam thing to do with that though

I'm sure it's fairly common. Sometimes the noise comes and goes. I just don't know if it can be fixed or do you have to replace it to stop the noise. I was wondering if anyone took one apart and bushed it or lubed it or something.

there are shims for the cam sensor , that allow you to shim it back to spec , its is basically a modified distributor and shims the same , knock out the roll pin, pull off gear and slide on shims , the shims are GM part # 1837627 and come in packs of 5

as to what the clearance needs to be maybe someone here has that info , i dont know it (yet)

There are 2 common wear problems with cam sensors. One is the bushings wear and allows lots of side-to-side shaft movement. Other is wear on the tabs at the bottom which allow lots of up and down movement.

An electrical shop could probably replace the bushings. Washers or shims can set shaft up and down play.

Hey, thanks guys! I just wanted to be sure it was fixable before I bothered to try. Thanks for the great info! ;)

I shimmed mine with nylon shims/washers that I got from the Lowes fastener section in the drawers. It worked.
Easy to do just make sure everything goes back just like it came out or apart. I have tried everything but a new one and the nylon quieted it down. I could put a stethescope on the top of the sensor and it sound like a Tom Tom drum.

FWIW

I replaced mine because the noise was insane. After the new one was in ~75% of the noise went away, but it still tapped a bit. A year later I replaced the original timing set that was REALLY worn. Noise is now gone. I believe a sloppy old timing set can cause a stop-start rotation that will bring a bunch of noise out of the cam sensor shaft.

Great input, guys............for a common problem. thanks! I just bought a Grand National a few months ago and trying to get out all the bugs. ;)

Well ya gotta do that timing set every couple hundred thousand miles, you know. :p

Is this a joke I'm missing out on? ;)

Mine does it on cold startup. Its fairly loud, but it goes away once the engine temp comes up. *Shrugs*

John, when did you get the GN!? Am I missing something here? :)

My brother's did that for a while. Eventually it will rap all the time. He replaced it a couple of weeks ago. It didn't cure the stumble problem, but it does sound much better.

I was sitting around in my palacial double-wide about 4 or 5 months ago, minding my own business and received a phone call from this guy who lives around the corner right here in Zephyrhills, who I seldom spoke to, asking me if I was interested in buying his GN. I was kind of looking for one, but they were always overpriced and far away. Well, he offered it to me for a fair price and I said, "YES"!

I like the "DARKSIDE" enough to consider painting my Red Regal T, BLACK! :D

just looked through h&rpartsnstuff catalog and they sell a cam sensor repair kit 20.00 , i think its from RJC

What does this tapping sound like? I have a noise thats coming out of my motor that I can't decide if its a lifter or what. It only does it when the engine is warm, and sounds horrible.

Sounds like a valve tap. Put a hose on it and put the other end to your ear to see if it is the cam sensor.

Thanks Paul........I took a look on the RJC site and the kit doesn't appear to have any bushings included. I believe the kit is to replace the "window" ring.

All the suggertions listed here are good! But if all else fails I have tried this & has worked. Take a large screwdriver & wedge it between the cam sensor houseing & timing cover portion behind the water pump & ( gently ) pry it a bit with the engine idleing. See if this makes a difference.
