well today i finished tuning the car with the alky finally got it to run 21 psi no knock and low 800 in the 02's with a 18* chip, anyway I decided to put in the 22* timing chip, freeway driving conditions where normal but then the car started to go up into the 180 temperature range, it is night about 65 degrees outside my car usually runs mid to low 160's, it got even worst when going up a little hill after getting off the freeway it got to 192 in less than 5 blocks, after parking the car i check for coolant leaks noticed none, also checked the oil for antifreeze and found none, so i took the 22 chip and popped in the 18* chip again, drove home and the car never when up over 168, stoomped on it a couple of times and when up to 187 and started to cool back down again, can a chip go bad, i am thinking my 22* chip might off gone to crap while sitting for a while.. what do you guys think..

Advancing the timing will cause higher coolant temps, because the ignition event happens earlier in the cycle and less heat is escaping out the exhaust valve, meaning more absorbed by the cylinder head. I cannot say however how MUCH more heat you should see.

Jim is correct. advancing timing on any vehical will cause an
increase in temp. did you have any knock under boost while
it was running this warm? it seems to be a higher than
normal temp for only an additional 4* of timing. yes a chip
can go bad but not by just sitting. static electricity can fry
a chip. usually though you'll know because most of the
programming will be wiped out and the car probabaly won't
run write. if you're cooling fan is coming on at the preset
temp then theres not much more you can do short of upgrading
your cooling system.

I have upgraded cooling system to a 3 row IE core, the thing is the car never had run this hot ever, specially at night and moving @65mph,it got to 178 that is way to much for me when i am use to running only low 160's, also why will the car run hot in just a few short blocks., go from 170 to 192 in less than 2 minutes, and i was not even under boost just going up a little tiny hill that's about it, it was just freaking weird that this would happen. i dont know what might off caused it, i dont think going 4* higher on the chip would really make that much of a difference, since i have run that chip before with no problems at all, but for some reason the car did not like it this last night i put it on, as far as knock, yes i experience a 6* of knock while under boost i let off really quick i dont think i hurt anything cause the car ran just fine after that, the only changes i made was the chip and added some water to the denatured abou 15% to the half bottle that would make it a 70/30 mix., after i took the 22* chip and popped in the 18* the car ran just fine, stomped on it a couple of time on the way home and it felt strong 02"s in the low 800, it never went over 175 after the runs i made ..

You are barking up the wrong tree. Check your fan operation. I'll be it isn't coming on in Lo-speed mode as it should. It is possible that the Fan On temp is too high in your 22* chip, but you made no mention of the chip's parameters. To suggest that a chip works fine, but the Fan routine has failed is preposterous.

Hey, I have an idea...

Since it does run hot on only one of the chips, why dont you contact the chip maker and ASK them if the fan routines are different in the two. If thery the same, you can bet yer a..er...butt that it IS in fact the added 4* causing your higher temps.

Think about it...assuming the two fan controls are the same. One runs hot, the other doesnt.....well...this is simple logic dude.....

Tell ya what. The motor is NG, you'll never fix it...I'll give ya $500 for the car :-)
