Can a trans make a gear whine sound?

I drove a TTA today.Everything sounds great at speed,but when the trans would shift into second,even louder in first,a gear whine sound would come in.If you out it in neutral,it would go away.WTF?!?!?!

Any ideas??Car has 35,000 verified miles.

Sounds very much like a sour planetary set in the transmission.

I agree with Greg. It's tough to tell from your description, but pump whine could be an outside possibility as well. The planetary is the next to the last thing to take out of the tranny. At that point you might as well freshen the tranny.

I'm gonna agree with both guys on this one. Before Joe did my Tranny it whined pretty loud in first. After we changed the planetary, all gone. Of course we freshened the whole tranny too.

Also could look at possible bearing going away in converter......

Whatever it is,it is definatley coming towards the back of the trans(if its not anything else.)

How much is the planery to replace?
