Car sputtering

Hey guys. I was wondering if you could help me out with this problem i have. I took the car out the other night and it did fine for about half the night. When i started to come home i raced a guy and when i floored it the car just started sputtering. I pulled over and look under the hood and there was steam coming from one of the headers. The car wouldn't start sputtering until 10 Pounds and up. So any advice will be helpful

did it smell like oil b/c there are many places above the headers which oil coould blow blow out of like maybe a bad valve cover gasket or something. just a guess

Was it steam or oil burning off the headers. What did it smell like?
