Friend of mine builds Carbon Fiber Hoods. Needs minimum of 6 people to make it worth while since he needs to do a mold of the hood. I would be the "mold" car if anyone is interested let me know.

Save 35 - 40lbs off the weight of the front end!

Pricing is dependant on how many hoods he builds.

I would be in providing price is decent. I have seen glass hoods but the fit so far from what i have seen is crappy.

im in depending on the price and the quality, its got to be show quality not the paint over cf. if its affordable and looks like a nice part ill buy one.

the finnish will be top notch, cause i spent $6,000 in paint,i'm not installing junk on my car lol

By the looks of it you have six of us:)

Are you going to be the Guinna pig:confused:

Please let the person know doing these that we Buick folk are extremely fussy;)

Trust me...I am fussy as well ;)

I am Duane and I'm the carbon guy. :)

I also will not put anything on my car unless it is of the highest quality which is why I can say you will be happy with what I can do for you. ;)

The hood brand is CFX aka carbonfibrefx.com. You can check out pictures there. Notice that other sites post pictures that are taken from a distance. We take close-up pictures as we like to show our quality.

We have rolled edges which keeps the rigidity, custom latches (would not be required in this case) and showroom finish. The carbon can be painted if you like but they come with a shiny finish. We could also make fibreglass.

Fit: The fit of these hoods are perfect. Again I stress this as I too am very picky on how things fit. The hoods are actually 1mm larger all around since we take a mold off the OEM hood. Again this will give it a rolled edge (unlike most manufacturers that cut the edges then sand them to look like rolled edges).

If you go under the home page and see what makes CFX better/different than anyone else, you will see the edges and underside etc...

How we can make them: The carbon fiber hoods can be made two ways: We can put 2 layers of carbon fiber with a fibreglass backing or 1 layer of carbon with a cloth which you see on our site.

The Porsche hoods have double carbon but most of our hoods have the cloth on back. Really depends on what you want.

If you have any questions feel free to post and as I said either Nomad or I can help you out. I am not just a carbon guy but a Turbo, boost and car fanatic also ;)

NOTE: I hope this post is ok for me to make.

Pricing will depend on how many people order. I will first need to look at a hood (I'll look at Nomad's later and take pictures) so I get a price together.

Your weight savings will be as Nomad said - between 35 - 40 lbs give or take a little. I would guess your GN hood to be around 62 pounds or a little less.

For a few good pics of some work that are not in teh gallery, here is a section where you can find them on the site.

We make parts for RHD drive cars also and send them over to the UK ;)

Take a browse around and check it all out.

What is the big difference between Glass from Carbon Fiber besides strengh....

Carbon is lighter and stronger than fibreglass. It does not need to be painted and does hold a higher impact than fibreglass. That is the difference.

If you want fibreglass, it is pretty much ready to paint. A quick prep and your ready to go! (Because the mold is made properly)

Do you have a ball-park for us $$

well all the other hoods on his website are around 550-650 so i bet the buicks hood is much bigger and a mold hasnt been made so i would guess 700-800$

just a guess... could be cheaper but that much would be out of my range... cheaper and i could think about it...

yeah, I'd be interested if he could keep it around $600. But my guess is probably not.

How about some better pics of the hood on that cutlass?

http://www.carbonfibrefx.com/gallery.htm

That cutlass hood was a pin on hood. No latches or anything. It was CF also though. I have no other pics of that car as it was made 4 years ago. (sorry) I can email the guy and see if he wants to send any..
Cutlass hood may be similar to make I would guess....?

Duane

Not bad for a 4 door eh ;) Street tires at that!

So what did we decide here? And how about comparing the fibreglass vs the CF? Which one would look the best painted? Don't want any "wavies" showing after it's done :)
