Sell it yourself, they will try and hose you would be my guess. Wholesale or worse,
everyone runs when I tell them about it slipping in reverse
Carmax will buy anything. If they notice the tranny slipping then they will hit it hard. Great miles for the year! Other than the tranny, how's it look and run? They will probably offer $500-$1000 over rough book (Black Book) if they don't notice the tranny issue.
It looks pretty good...has a couple dents nothing too big. For it having a tranny problem I think it runs pretty good. What would be the black book value? Any clue or site I can see it at?
Describing the car correctly or accurately will help with with a value. What trim or model is it? Leather? Auto I'm guessing? Sunroof? Good tires? Wheel rash? Good paint? Any paintwork done? What color is the outside and interior? Maintenance records? If you can post a few pics it would help. Shane (SGRIM) should have a Black Book handy. Also location will determine value as well. How far do you live from a Carmax? It would only take 20-30 minutes for a free appraisal. The appraisal offer is good for 7 days or 300 miles, whichever comes first. If you do sell it to Carmax they will charge a $150 fee.

I have not had good times with CarMax. For instance... in 2002 I brought my 1992 25th Ann Heritage Edition Camaro in to see what they would offer me. Spent a HUGE chunk of the day there. The car was mint. Red with the factory black stripes. Black/Gray interior. Had only 28,000 miles on it....perfect. Their offer: $3,000. They said, "We only look at how old the car is...not how good the condition it is in." I said, "GOODBYE!"
End of the story...Sold it the next month on Ebay for $8,500. Lesson learned.

Its automatic 3.0L FWD, leather seats, sunroof, color is like a beige goldish grey
... It has a couple dings, nothing really major, and i believe it hasnt had any paint work or body work. Here are some pics...tell me what you think.

Well, mine is a 2002 so hopefully I'll have better luck! I think I'm gonna take it tomorrow.
Nice looking car. It's an average book car if it doesn't have paintwork. Like I said before if they notice the tranny slipping then they'll hit it hard. They hit Luxery cars a little harder when miles are over 50K. They will probably note the dents/dings but they will probably not deduct it off the appraisal because most all Carmax stores have their own PDR (paintless dent)person. How is the windshield? Any cracks or obvious stone chips? The tires look good so they shouldn't hurt you. Check engine light on? I'll see if I can guess their offer.
Is it a Quattro?
Here's what Average Black book is...
$4800 + Auto and leather adds $300=$5100
If it's a Quattro then Average book is $6200
If they notice the tranny issue then they will deduct at least $1000.
My guess is if they really want it then they'll offer $4850-$5250
If the tranny scares them then it will be $3500-$4000

I appraised roughly about 10,000 cars for Carmax, so I've seen a few odd ball cars come in for appraisals. You can't take classics or special edition cars there that are older than 6-7 years old. They can't really do anything with them, so they auction them off to wholesalers if they buy them. Carmax really wants low mile cars with no paintwork, well optioned and good color combo. They really focus on cars that are 5 years old or newer that sell good in the region that they're in. They try to stay away from the off-lease, no options, high mileage cars. Most people don't like the offers, but most of them return a month or two later because they can't sell their car. 
Dang... I at least wanted to get $6000. I have a feeling they will probably notice the tranny. What if I go and they offer me a deal and then the deal expires? And I go back...will they make the same offer? I just put a warranty on the car that covers everything for $100. I pay $116 every month for 24 months... But the warranty starts in 30 days and after 500 miles. They told me I would be able to sell warranty with vehicle or if I sell before warranty starts I could get the $150 down I paid. WHat would you recommend to me. I'm thinking about just waiting till the warranty starts and then get the transmission fixed with that $100 deductible. Also where are you located? Just curious?
I live in the ATL area. If there are no major changes in the car then the offer should stay the same within 5000 miles and the next 5 months. I would at least get an offer from Carmax, then go from there. What is your car situation? Is this a 3rd vehicle or your only tranportation? Is the car paid for? Lets try to look at the big picture. I doubt that the warranty will transfer to a dealership, do you just stop paying the warranty if you sell? If you keep the car, continue to pay the warranty (fix tranny), basically unless something else major happens then you will be paying $115 X 24 months= $2760 for a tranny to bring the car up to par. I would either cut my losses and wash my hands of it or get the tranny fixed and try to sell to a private person that wants to continue paying for a warranty. If you decide to fix the car and continue driving for the next 3-5 years then I think that would be OK too. Do you have any kids that are or will be old enough to drive? I would have Audi look at the tranny issue before completely committing to this warranty, could be a simple fix? You could advertise on Craigslist to see if you get any bites. Let me know

Why not fix it and sell it yourself? I know it may be a hassle but, it can really make a difference. I sold my 2000 Audi 1.8tqm with 130k on the clock for around $7500... Just need to wait it out for the right buyer.
But, if "it's only money" and you have plenty, then let them offer you the peanuts that they will likely offer you.
In fact, IIRC I took the Audi to Carmax to check out and their offer was around $2-3k. It was a complete waste of time.

Totally agree! If you sell it yourself...the money gain outweighs the personal potential pain.:smile:
No I dont have kids Im 19 and bought the car cash... I needed a daily driver to get to school and back and thought car looked great but shortly after learning that the maintance cost for these vehicles was very expensive... I want to get rid of it. I have put it on craigslist and got bites but everyone ran when I told them about the trans slipping.:frown:
I probably will do this more then likely...wait till the warranty starts and just get the trans fixed then sell it. Do you think someone would buy it with the warranty? And also...when trans is fixed, how much should I ask for the car then?
I would think with the good miles, fixed tranny and the good color combo you could get it sold for $7500 give or take. Being an 02 model (8-9 year old car) means that it would be hard for someone to get a loan for it compared to an 07 a newer. Just a thought
Well, I will probably do that more then likely. I just want to get back what i paid for it($5700) and if its possible make a small profit. Once I sell I'll probably get a cheap gas saver then save up rest of money for a GN but only time will tell.
