Read this one early this morning.
http://www.wsj.com/articles/caterpillar-to-close-five-plants-shed-820-jobs-1461889854

At the end I also read through the reader comments and this on just didn't set well with me for some reason.....

"Caterpillar has a world-wide workforce of 115,000. A reduction of 820 is a about 7/1,000 thnds of the total workforce. Well-run businesses have to fire from time-to-time.

If we assume the average worker makes $50,000/year including benefits, this is a total annual payroll of $5.75 billion. I'm surprised you're objecting to $5-10 million extra for a talented, hardworking CEO.

If he's not doing his job, the board can fire him.

Cheers."

The article mentioned that 10,000 jobs were to be cut soon.

Its just another sign that the economy is not getting better like Obama is leading us to believe. After almost 8 years, you would think that things got a little better. Hopefully they do and hopefully, those losing their jobs can find another job.

I've never liked "work place slackers" and making a company "lean & mean" by getting rid of those types would just be good management decisions....but laying off good hard working people for the sake of profit sucks.

Being from the Peoria area, I worked at several locations around town...The last being the Mossville engine plant. It's long gone, w/ a skeleton crew there, last time I went by. I think the research facility is still there. Was, last time I was in the area... Some 6 yrs ago.
The East Peoria plants I worked in, are no longer standing.
The plants here in GA, AIRC, are mostly gone. However, they have just opened a new plant in Athens, making machines for export....

The Joliet Il plant is scheduled to move operations to Mexico. I bet the main reason is taxes. Illinois taxes are out of control. We pay the highest taxes in the nation yet the government cry's broke. I plan to move to Indiana myself. I know its a shithole but property taxes alone are half. To me its a no brainer...

Hey Chuck, i am from Peoria too. Worked for a bit in E. Peoria also. Worked at bldg. SS TTBU.

I don't think i've ever worked at a place with as many LAZY workers. In a 10 hour shift, i'd have my work load done by lunch time, then get moved to another dept. to fill in for others. And that included a morning nap in the shitter to kill time. Loved working there, but damn.... some serious slacking!

When we get invaded, it's gonna be fairly difficult to revamp all the McDonalds and Walmarts over to making tanks, planes, and other various armaments...

My employer actually closed the paper plant we opened in Mexico. We had sent all our older machines we mothballed down there. It got shuttered after about 5 years. They have plants all over the globe. But several of the US plants are trimming down workers by offering retirement packages etc. My plant has went from 1200 in 2000 to around 800 now. I helped start up our newest production line and it has shut down 2 old ones in the plant. With 3 less people we make in 12hrs what the old ones can make in 24hrs, with 3 less people. Just a few more years and I can retire.
