Catillatic Converter Question

if that is how you spell it , will a new cat. for an 87 work on my 81? or is it too big. I got an exhaust off of an 87, and I want to buy one that will bolt up, and weld in to the 81 dp. But it has to pass smog. I have heard of cats being too big or too small. will this work??????? please help. I would post this in the smog section, but nobody there knows anything but 86 and up thanks guys.

A cat is a cat, just remove your smog pump pipes that would feed it.
I have a highend cat on my 83, soon to be moved to the 86.
I'll get you that pic tonight, been on the road and working graves.
