If your talking about

the small splines were the input shaft goes in the T/C, yes it should turn free and yes the only way to have it properly checked is to have it cut opened and have it rebuilt.

should it spin free both ways , mine only spins free one way and the other way is very tight or does not turn at all.

I have three of them a D5, B&M Hole Shoot 2000 and one unknown all of which spin freely both ways.

I'll try to explain.

The spline you are referring to is the stator support spline. It is part of the stator assembly in the converter. The stator assembly itself should be free to turn in either direction. It's basically floating between the two converter halves.

The amount of resistance may vary from one converter to the next depending on whether it has needle bearings, thrust washers or one of each.

Now, if the stator assembly is rather snug in the converter, you will find that the spline will turn easier in one direction than the other. That is because the spline is actually an inner race for a one-way roller clutch or sprag that is mounted inside the stator. The prescence of the one-way clutch in the stator assembly lets the stator turn in only one direction when the stator is engaged, or grounded, to the stator tube on the transmission pump.

Clear as mud now right? :p
