Is there supposed to be a clamp that holds the end of the downpipe to the beginning of the cat. converter? OR, does the end of the downpipe supposed to just slip over the beginning of the converter/test pipe?
It does not require a clamp. It is not going anywhere if it is secured properly (i.e.-downpipe slides into cat converter or test pipe). Plus, there is no reason for it to be air tight anyway.
Back when the car had the stock y-pipe leading to a set of glass packs dumped before the axles (mufflers added by the original owner ) I didn't have a clamp holding the dump-pipe to the down-pipe and about 1000', I heard this loud bang and horrible grinding sounds. Pulled off on the return road and found the dump-pipe had been blown off the down-pipe . The stainless dump-pipe was dented and was somewhat ground down from the asphalt at 110...That week I decided to order a new hooker exhaust for it, but I still use a clamp...
