I just purchased a set of '86 TType wheels. The wheels are very dirty and crusty. Would sand blasting them be the answer? Also I have seen these wheels before with a polish look. Has anyone in here done that before?

Thanks,
Kevin Bolger

From experience - The problem with the T-Type wheels is that the clear coat breaks down and crud gets between the coating and the aluminum. What I did was get some industrial aluminum cleaner and a scotch brite pad. Took about an afternoon of scrubbing but they came out looking really good. I've also heard of people using muratic acid (like they use to clean concrete) but haven't tried that.

Of course, you could save yourself the work and go here: Wheels about 2/3 way down the page.

Bead blasting works fine for cleaning, you might "upset" the cabinet owner if they aren't uncrusty before you use the cabinet however. ;)

Muriatic acid also works on overly crustied wheels, gas mask and good rubber gloves and boots recommended.

Obviously an outdoor job, that acid is strong and a bit dangerous.

I'd clear them again and perhaps silver them first before using.

VHT makes some reasonably priced wheel paint.

brian at g bodyparts.com will strip em down then reclear them..thell look like they did in 87..or they can be polished to a complete shine.

Thanks for the replies. I think I will try to clean and media blast them.
