Very nice chrome the grey applique will need replaced

Is there a way to remove or repair that grey material under the clear plastic. Mine looms similar to that one.

I replaced the gray inserts in my shifter bezel. The new stuff isn't the same as the original but I think it looks better. Doesn't have to match anything so it doesn't look incorrect. Worst part if removing the adhesive the old appliqué leaves behind.
