What determines a converter size. I see people running 12s and 10s…. Why the size difference?

A 12” converter is 12” diameter, a 10” is 10” and so on.
If you think of a converter as 2 fans, one on the engine and one on the transmission. The larger converter has more surface area to move the car easier (lower stall). The smaller converter has less surface area and takes more engine speed to get the car moving (higher stall).
Blade count and angle play a big role in determining stall speed as well, but I think you get the idea.

Fantastic explanation. What size is the stock D1 converter I believe it is?

I believe the stock converter is a 12” and is a D5.
It seems most newer converters are 245mm (9 1/2”).
The trick is to have the converter loose enough to spool up a 165hp V6 and within a .5 sec be able to hold down a 600hp monster efficiently with little slip all in by 5,000 rpm.
Converter tech has evolved like turbos, they are so much better in the last 5 years or so.
