It was making noise after running the 5-Speed trans with only about one quart of fluid.

Today it started to make lots of noise after a few blocks of driving then after comming to a stop, 1st gear, pull 2nd gear, and crunch!!! 3rd gear crunch and gears just stripping away, only 30 MPH but I went for 4th for that 1:1 gear that seems to have not been making noise with hopes to crawl home - it was just a few blocks.

So, about what can I expect to pay to have this taken care of? It is a 1991 4X4 Eplorer Sport (2-door)

TIA,

It really depends on what all is damaged inside. Usually the 3 plugs on the shifter tower leak the fluid out. They are rubber that have two little tangs on the inside edge that keep them from falling out. When they run that low on fluid, the front (input) bearing and the cluster gear get worn down. The cluster gear is "idle" in 4th and should get you home. It might actually cost you more than finding one in wrecked car and swapping it out. The last one I did cost more than $1500 but the customer wanted to keep the original trans.

On this particular trans, everything was toast. About the only good items left were the shifter tower, case, 4th and 5th assemblies. We get all our manual parts from someplace down in Texas and I can't remember the name of the company right now. Cluster gears for these Mazda trannies are kinda expensive. We found another place at one time for parts and the teeth actually came apart from being made with cheap metal and improper hardening practices. THAT cluster gear was around $175.
