Guys,
Does anybody know what's the best tuner/chip for a powerstroke? What works and what dosen't? I figured I'd ask here because I know us TR guys research the hell out of stuff before we buy it.

I have an Edge on my 04 with a 4" downpipe and exh, it is a 2wd 4dr dually and runs low 14's at 98mph. There are several different types of tuners, those like the Edge or Quad box plug in line with the factory harness and cannot be detected by the dealer for warranty work IF they are removed prior to service. The major disadvantage to this type of box is that it does nothing to reprogram the transmission and if you leave it on HIGH it will burn it up.
The other style tuner is a flash type, Innovative Diesel has an SCT tuner with their custom program in it that kicks ass. It reprograms the trans line pressure and shift points, it is the best thing going right now, however, if you need to return the truck for service they will know it has been reflashed.

I love my diablo predator. I own a buisness and have an 01 f250 w/superchips tuner. It woke the truck up a bunch.
I also have an 02 f350 w/bully dog tuner. My brother drives this truck and he loves the bully dog. One side note about the bully dog is that we ordered 4 different electronic devices for different trucks and 3 out of 4 had to be sent back because they did not work. I will no longer purchase bully dog stuff.
I personally drive an 00 f350 crew cab 4x4 w/diablo predator tuner. The truck flies!!! No track times but two nights ago I beat a 98 mustang gt 4.6 5 speed. It belongs to a kid that works for me. My truck also smokes BLACK like a tracktor puller under heavy exceleration, much more than with the other tuners. I LOVE IT! JUst my 2 cents, hope it helps.

Tuners

I'm With Bob. I'd go with an Edge. Predator sometimes has extremely high egt's. They are good tunes, but usually a little on the dangerous side.

Thanks for the info. It's a 7.3, forgot to mention.
Bill, Are you talking about Diesel Innovations out of Houston? What kind of EGT's are you seeing with "Edge"?

1bad85GN, I've heard good things aboout the Predator. How about your EGT's?

Thanks TurboDave, I've been reading on the diesel stop and fte.

One thing to keep i didn't see mentioned is that almost all of those chips require and aftermarket exhaust, and intake to work. There are also a bunch of little tricks one can do to the powerstrokes to get them running better with or without a chip. for example the injectors ar not electronicly controlled but oil press. operated. The lines look alot like the ones on our TR'e, that is they are in a "U" shape and go around the engine. The problem is towards the end of the line there is a big press. difference and that cause alot of the vidration you get on the powerstrokes. by taping the oil and diesel lines on both sides will help out a lot. As for blowing black smoke out of you Pipe, that is just unburned deisel and really not giving you much power. the only way black smoke is good/normal is with some huge injectors, but thats way down the road. The big weak point in the deisel delivery on the ferd's is the pump.......it sucks ass.......Change that an you won't wave to get injectors for a while if ever, depending of coures how fast you plan on going.

just my .02 cents

Superchips makes a great tuner also, I install a lot of here In Idaho with many happy customers, so as you see you have many choices to choose from, if I can help please let me know.

Innovative Diesel in Elkton MD

Anybody tried one of Jody Tipton's tunes? I see he is spoken highly of on the Diesel Stop. I may try his tune.

My neighbor has an *Edge* on his 4x4 dualie, the only modification is a different air filtering setup.

Leaving 6 patches at a time, was kind of impressive.....

The acclerometer in the Edge said it was a mid 14 at 85 MPH, and that *seemed* about right.

Just a minor correction. Maybe you forgot. The injectors are electronically controlled. But hydraulically actuated by the high pressure oil system. Read up on HEUI injections systems (which the Powerstroke uses

Here's a technical explanation that might help.
