Hey I installed my new direct scan unit today, and I hooked everything up right like it says. But when I turn on the car and let it run the program it says that The hardware has timed out and i click yes to retry but keeps saying the same things.

Does anyone know what could be happening?

First, I've never had any luck using the "retry" button. I have to say abort and then start over with realtime display, when I forget to plug in the parallel port cable to the laptop. Second, check over the areas you cleaned on the ecm. Most common problem is to not get all the coating off. Third, make sure you don't have the cable upside down on the ecm. Won't smoke anything but won't work. Fourth, any chance you have a friend with ds so you can try their "known good, working" laptop, to rule out problems with yours? That's the biggest thing, to know whether you should be chasing pc issues or connection problems.
 
Hey thanks tomorrow i will have to try a friends laptop and see what theres does with this system. I tried his direct scan unit too but it said the same thing but i will try the computer out.

When that happened to me it was because I hadn't cleaned all the plastic (or whatever it is) from the blade on the ECM. It looked good to me, but evidently not to the PC. After cleaning it up a bit more it worked fine.

I still get the time out once in a while, but ususally "retry" works. When it doesn't I jiggle the connector at the ECM.

Even if his laptop doesn't work with your ds box on your car, try yours with his on his car. That way you can prove your laptop is ok so you won't have to wonder later :-).
