This is a call for help! Is there anyone who has figured a way to boot up in DOS on a computer w/WIN XP? I own a beautiful new lap top (pre-installed WIN XP) and DS. I'm trying to make this work. Tried making a bootable diskett--- can't get it to run the program when it boots up to A:> DOS prompt. I'm still behind the times in computer witt, but I'm catching up fast. If you can help, please post or E-Mail me. I posted this under Scan Tool Tech,(had some good input) but I thought I could reach a broader audience here. I've been messing with this for a week now and I'm getting burnt out! Thanks Brian

Ok well after reading your post in the scan tool section, you may just be a little off. When you boot to the dos disk, you will be at a: for the dos disk. At this point you need to either:

1. Take the dos disk out and insert the direct scan disk. Type ds

OR

2. Change from a: to c:\wherever the file is\ds

Try that and see how you make out:)

Sorry, but that won't work, except maybe to read a pre-recorded file.

A Windows NT-based kernel (NT 4.0, 2000, XP) won't allow Direct Scan to properly operate. An NT-based system requires a kernel-mode driver to perform I/O on the parallel port, and Direct Scan doesn't operate this way.

My laptop is set up with two partitions. One loaded with Windows 98 SE, the other with Windows XP Pro. This allows me to use Direct Scan, and use XP the other 99.99% of the time.

If you'd like to set yours up this way, let me know. Happy to help.

...yes, I'm a Software Engineer.

Sorry, I guess I didn't answer your ACTUAL question:

"...figured a way to boot up in DOS on a computer w/WIN XP?"

You can't. Unlike Windows 9x operating systems, NT-based OS's do not run on top of a DOS shell. Therefore, a Windows XP machine can't be booted to DOS.

Thanks Mark I've tried both suggestions proir to this post and all commands are invalid. It just will not accept any attempt I make to access DS. Although DS is in my C drive (I can access it thru "command prompt" or "run" from the start menu). Error message form the DOS prompt states"DS.EXE not found in C:\DS although when in the DS program it says the current DIR is C:\DS.----------------------------------------------Quickwrench, You have mail!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
