Right now I just have the bare block sitting in the engine compartment with everything else on the floor to the side...All I am looking to do is replace the rear main seal, replace the timing chain and gears, oil and water pumps...and that's it. I am keeping all the stock internals where they are since there is no damage to them and the motor was running awesome before I decided to blow a headgasket...now when I blew the headgasket, it blew on the valley side on #4 and no coolant got in the oil or gasket material...so the motor is fine...

my question is...can I just leave that block in there and just change the rear main seal and the timing chain and all that stuff while still connected to the tranny? or would it just be alot easier pulling the whole thing out...not sure which route I want to go here...I was actually thinking about pulling it out and painting the block...any thoughts? gotta start rolling on this thing so I can get this car done!

You can do it in the car, but it would be easier on your back if you pulled it out.:) JUst have to weigh the options, and what suits you best.I've pulled my motor many of times, so it would be easier for me.

IMO Pull it. Pan will have to come off anyway.Things will be much easier and you said you wanted to paint the block anyway.Dont think about painting it in the car. If it were me id also have a look at/replace the bearings while the engine is out.

Just my$.02

I say pull the motor out....It will be a lot eaiser to put together on a stand where you can get to everything easily. Plus then you can clean up the engine compartment better with nothing in there.:)

I guess it's just me, but I would probably leave it in. Unless you have any reason to pull the crank. But, on the flipside, you will probably have just as much time in working around the engine in the car as you would pulling it to do all the stuff that you want to. And, when it's easier to get to, you can do a lot better job at the same time.
