I have to agree that many aren't as good with a screwdriver as others. The biggest problem is: they don't pay attention to details. I'm contantly having to un-screw things that others have screwed up(especially on cars and Harleys  ). Some just shouldn't be allowed to touch a tool(or at least: not permitted to sell something they've worked on). Anyway: A man's got to know his limitations. Given thought, planning, and a touch of craftsmanship(not to mention- the tools): anyone with a modicum of mechanical ability could build an OEM appearing dash though. Be honest with yourself, and if you feel up to it: don't be afraid to be creative! When installed: the only clue to mine not being OEM(my work is better than my photography) is that all the gauges are not from the same supplier(would they could have been). There are alot more gauges available now, than there were when I put mine together. I hate cobbled-looking stuff, and take great pride in what I've built through the years. I've always gotten compliments on the dash, and having created it myself is also a source of personal satisfaction. Just another way to enjoy my ride! ;) Gratification is what this hobby is about, whether it's going fast, having a cherry ride, or what mods we've come up with using our own ingenuity. To each his own: JUST HAVE FUN!!

GNut: Rodman's panel doesn't look homemade at all when installed... Rodman even wired it up really nice, which surprised me. If you havent seen one to this day that dont look homemade, well today ends your streak. Unless im missing something?!

If your decent with tools, have access to them, and dont mind blowing some time, I see np with doing a dash. All it is is a few bends and holes. Trick that exists is the fit, which you've already figured all out.

Dashes

www.gnttype.org has wiring diamgrams for both the analog and digital dashes. I installed a GNX dash that was wired for an analog dash into a car with a digital with some work. I had to take the connector in the dash apart and rewire it to match the analog configuration. If you went to a junk yard I would assume just about any mid 80's G-body would have the same connectors behind the dash. With that and the wiring diagrams you can use the original wiring for most gages as long as they are electrical and you bought the right senders.
