I'm working on restoring my WH1 a bit.

It has 73K miles on it (bought it with 23K in 97), the paint is lacquer checked all to hell but very few door dings. Carpet need replaced, headliner is gone.

Heres some pics:

Now for my questions.

To save on paint costs I am going to do as much of the prep work as I can myself.

Whats the best way to strip the paint. Any tutorials on the best way to do it?

Should I pull the spoiler off too?

I might paint the bumpers too, how do you prep them?

Where the best place to get carpet? Original Parts Group sell it, but its ACC carpet and I heard it turns green after a while?

Whats the normal cost to get a headliner and visors done?

Lots of work to do! :)

My two cents would be to figure who you want to paint your car, and then discuss with him the way he would feel comfortable painting your car. Some people like to do all the work so that they know it was done the way the want it. Others, like the guy whom i using, is going to let me pull everything off the car (bumpers, glass, lights, door panles etc) to make his job easier. Some will even let you work with them at their shop, to help with the cost.

The headliner work should cost about 100 bucks with the headliner removed by you...and about 150 with the shop doing alll the work...at least thats the prices around here.

Hope that helps at least some of your questions

Ben's site is a very good one for any WH1 owner....myself included ;) If I can throw in some advice, have the paint guy actually paint the stripes on, don't let him use pinstripe tape again! One more thing, take a good video camera and go over the whole car (where the stripes curves/thickness of them, emblem placement, rusty areas or anything that may pose a problem down the road) This saves so much time and hassle especially when you go to put it back together.
