Dome light

Would there be much of a problem switching over from a dome light to a map light on a '86 GN?

Not really. The only big problem is the hole left by the old dome light. Not a big deal if you plan on replacing your headliner anyway. The Map light sits a couple of inches forward of where the dome lamp was. There is a special mounting plate for it.
